More Resolutions Support?
« on: December 26, 2012, 09:39:41 AM »

I would like to know how possible/easy it would be to make Starfarer work at 720p. I saw statements from Alex that said the game did support a minimum resolution  of 1024x768, and that it was because unsupported resolutions would screw up the UI. Being able to play in 720p would be better (imo) for playing windowed mode with the same aspect ratio, and it would be great for recording because uploading in 1080p is very often overkill...

Well... It depends on your recording program... As you are aware.

But more supported resolutions is always great, though Im sure its not as easy as flipping a switch.

I think you can change the resolution by going into the settings.json in the config file and changing line 13 to:
Code
	"resolutionOverride":"<insert screen resolution>",
(remove the # in front if it does not work)
Also, I believe you have to be in dev mode for this to work.

EDIT:
Works for me. :) And what's better, the buttons have a good click box, no more clicking on one thing and clicking on another by accident.

EDIT 2:
Got 1280x720 to work, although nothing else.  Hmm.

and everything works fine? I'm still suggesting it should be a default option... not a lot of people will want to have to edit game files...

Also, what would I use to open a .json?

Any text editor.  Personally, I use Notepad ++, but that's your choice. :)

Like I said above, none of the lower resolutions work for some reason, 1080x720 doesn't work and niether does 720x480 (which is what I really want, small screen that I can alt-tab out of and into).

It shouldn't - some important UI buttons will be off-screen.

If you *are* getting it to look right, it's probably not using the resolution you requested - if you try to force a resolution the monitor doesn't support, it'll end up with the closest one that it does.

Well, 1280x720 is slightly longer and slightly shorter than 1024x760 on my screen, so that works out. :)

But anyways, if I haven't already said it, +1 to this suggestion.

Is your monitor a weird aspect ratio Soldier? I really would like to play at 720p but if it'll mess up UI elements for me then it's not really possible. Is it not possible/too time consuming to be worth it to make the UI just scale to that resolution?

It is 16:9, but the numbers themselves do seem odd for a monitor. I tried recording while playing at 1366x768, and 3 things about that:
1. The video recorded at 1360x768
2. The quality was awful after trying to export it at 720p
3. It made me sad :(

Only commonly used 16:9 resolutions I hear talked about are 1080p and 720p, I actually looked up 1366x768 to make sure it was 16:9 because I didn't want to do the math myself, and I never knew 'til then...
