Fleet movement
« on: December 06, 2012, 12:41:44 PM »

Currently when two fleets attempt to intercept eachother they frequently orbit each other like debris circling a drain. I work around it by micro managing the course. It would be awesome if the fleets could do for themselves what I'm doing by eyeball.

The fleet's acceleration heading should exist within a 90° range from destination to perpendicular. The ratio of the current perpendicular velocity component to maximum possible velocity deflects the acceleration heading away from destination towards perpendicular (deceleration). As the perpendicular velocity component decreases the acceleration heading swings towards the desired destination avoiding the toilet bowl syndrome.

It's the same principle where in combat maintaining orbit around a target can be accomplished almost entirely by accelerating towards the target. Closing the distance requires deflecting the thrust direction to counter any current perpendicular motion.

Would be nice, it gets annoying as hell when you finally chase down the much smaller fleet and they simply spin around you and leave.

The problem with the 'circling down the drain' is that ships don't properly intercept, they just go straight to where they are instead of where they will be.
