If You Could Have Three Skills...
« on: September 06, 2012, 06:45:44 AM »

If you the chance to add three (3) character skills (or traits, or perks, ect.) to Starfarer, what would they be? Having no idea how the skills (or traits, or perks) will function in Starfarer, you aren't restricted to anything (within reason).

As for the skills I would want, they would have to be:
Trader: You can buy at lower prices and sell at higher prices.
Salvage: You gain more credits for every ship you scrap or destroy.
Engineer: Your ships repair quicker, and have a higher chance of being repaired after being disabled.

Well, maybe speculating too much:

Diplomat: You have a bonus when negotiating with other factions.
Architect: Your outposts and stations have increased design points.
Mentor: Your captains/administrators gain experience more quickly.

BAAI AI controlled drones and autofiring weapons behave uncannily like a human. This means they plan out their attacks far better, lead better, and due to advanced sub-rhythms usually don't miss.
UncooperativeReduces your standing with factions larger than you, but increases their fear of you for every time you win a battle, which spreads to everyone else, boosting your renown and making it much more of a decision to declare you an enemy. Huge boost to conspicuousness however.
ConnectionsAcquired through offers, businesses, or threats, these connections provide various buffs to everything, some under the table, others more outright. Boosts renown, boosts fear, reduces conspicuousness, allows for some small money income boosts, improves crew, generally a go-to skill which gives boosts to everything. However, it's usually locked to actually requiring you to know people.

I think that skills like "Engineer" and "Salvage" and basically everything that's just good, but does not push your strategy in a certain direction, or really helps making your character an individual,  is more befitting for officers.

OCD, Uncooperative or Rouge's Tongue are great ideas, I would love the game to go in that direction with characters.

Heartless Bastard - Removing escape pods and crew safety equipment from ships to gain more OP (but increasing casualties) , your "cowardly" captains fear you and become "cautious"

Honorable - Bonus in diplomacy, its easier to get escort and defend jobs, slight decrease in sell prices (you cant to shortchange anybody), lower destroy/capture rate for fleeing opponents

Womanizer/Maneater - Additional dialog options when talking with the opposing sex (Kirk style), positive and very negative reactions possible. Maybe occasionally inexplicable crew gain on long interstellar travels...

Glass Shadow - On strategic map fleet appears to be 2x bigger than it actually is.  ( could help early in campain but Im not sure about this one )

Corporate - Gain more income from business rather than fights

Ace Pilots - all fighter wings that have participated for atleast 3 battles gain elite status immediately

War Veteran - Being in a previous war of some sort has taught you at thing or two. Fleet FP increased by 25. Ship FP dropped by 5%. (This is to simulate better CNC skills)

Elite Marine Training - All Marines purchased from Stations have an "Elite" bonus making them twice as effective as normal marines with regards to their ability to subdue and overwhelm a captured ship's surviving crew. In addition, you are granted a slightly higher chance to board disabled ships after each victorious engagement in which you have at least one Elite marine in your fleet.

Fortunate Boldness - At the beginning of any engagement where you are facing a foe who believes themself to be superior, and you choose to attack anyway (both sides must be attacking, and enemy fleet must have a higher combat/fleet value), you are granted a +10 initial fleet points bonus for the first 3 seconds ONLY. This will allow you to, if you choose, deploy slightly more numerous or more powerful ships from your fleet for the opening move of the engagement.

Scouting Specialist - For the penalty of a -10% drop in maximum fleet size, you are granted a +5% increase in overall speed for all ships (fighters through capital ships).

Flux Theory Knowledge-Your time spent studying the rare and obscure Flux science has allowed you to modify the ship to increase flux dissipation on your ships by 10%. Due to the maintenance of such systems all armor is in disrepair, decreasing it by 5%
Charismatic-Your high charisma allows you to have an increased number of employees, increasing FP by 15. Also attracts more highly skilled officers
Engine Modification-Increases speed on all ships by the square root of the unmodified speed plus 10. However, your engines are more likely to burnout, and take longer to repair.

I will not try to cleverly name these, haha.

I love carrier type ships in other games, so I'd be going for crazy drone stats, haha.
  • Added percentage of drone capacity
  • Faster Repair rate

Also I think I'd want something to aid my beloved hound. Maybe some skill that gives you better strafe acceleration.

WHEN IN DOUDT BLOW STUFF UP- ships in your fleet explode at a level above them(ex destroyer blows up cruiser size)and capitals just nuke. All this because you stow Inferium charges in your cargo bay.
OVER MILITARIZATION- Your ship get a large overall combat boost at the cost of a severe decrease in logistics stats.
STRIPPED OUT- By ripping out almost ever thing not crucial to life and filling it up with black market tech standard upgrades custom mods and stuff that just should not fit you give your ships a performance almost unmatched in space. decrease crew capacity increase accident risks you make a cruiser fly like a big frigate,

Ruthless:  You never capture enemy ships, always killing their crew and breaking them up for scrap, but you get 10 additional CPs at the start of battles.

I'm Insured:  You're much more likely to Repair ships that have been disabled after battles, but you have to pay 50/100/350/1000 a week, per ship in your fleet, for the costs of insurance.

Slaver:  After battles, you capture 10-25% of the enemy Crew and can sell them as slaves or use them to man your fleets (albeit they start off as even worse than recruit crew).  However, this makes your relationships with certain factions considerably worse every time you sell slaves.
