Burn Drive is a bit odd?
« on: August 09, 2012, 11:23:04 AM »

Anyone else ever notice that Burn Drive is actually fairly lenient with collisions? I mean, I was burn driving my way in a Dominator just for my testing period and I noticed even though I head on collided with the enemy my engines didn't cut out. I moved a full 45 degrees to the right after it too.

It was really weird. It took a while to start seeing my ship flaming out if it collided.

Yes, I've noticed that it's quite forgiving.

I mean, I've sent ships pinwheeling before with no repercussion.

It's only a risk vs same-sized ships or larger (in terms of hull class), and then it's a very high chance - but not a certainty.

This should probably be changed to in terms of mass (or at least allow for mass to be used as a criteria) because of mods adding larger ships sizes. (Someone was just PMing me yesterday regarding ships larger than capship size)

I'm not sure if this is somewhere else but here's a trick with the burn drive: fire just a little to drive flux just above 0 and then vent. It will stop the burn drive early. This might actually be a bug - the AI never uses it. [Edit] this was posted just a little while ago :P.

I've noticed that while burn driving my Onslaught tends to shoot friendlies in the back by accident (I'm piloting, the weapons are on autofire).

Anyone think that Burn Drive ships should attempt to ram other ships?

No. I don't trust the AI to make that kind of risky decision.

But it looks awesome and is great versus shields as it usually overloads them for a long period of time.

The weapons on my ship also tend to be great vs. shields...

Also the ship bouncing away after colliding tends to throw off the main weapons. Not handy for when you want to blast the ever-loving crap out of the ship while it's vulnerable

Usually ramming them keeps them overloaded for longer than your engines are out.  This also only applies to ramming ships in a equal or larger class.  If this was ramming a Dominator than the engines would still be active.

Super 'aggressive' use of the Burn Drive by Onslaughts would make fighting them a fairly scary deal. I fear for Tri-Tachyon battleships that try to engage them and get close enough for a ram.

In one, final moment of glory I gave the order to engage burn drive. Firing all of the remaining working weapons, we forced the enemy onslaught to turn away rapidly and crashed hard into it's side, though the Mjolnir cannons crushed an entire deck and in one glorious explosion both ships were consumed by the explosion that ensued.

Since the burn drive I just put tons of LMG's on the onslaught along with helbores and then go ramming.
