Free Stuff

Update: compiled all my stuff over time back into this thread. Now it actually doesn't suck.

Rendering ships with 3ds max:

Backgrounds:

Figured I'd make some starscapes. They both look decent ingame, and don't obstruct anything.

(These look best if you remove the default stars sprites scattered in the background.)

Milky Way Skybox:
Quote

This came as a result of testing out Space Engine's skybox exporting ability, which works fairly well, though they required a bit of editing.

So, this is a set of 5 backgrounds centered in a location on the other side of the Milky Way. Might not be the most dramatic backgrounds ever, but if realism is your thing, then these might be for you.

Firestorm:

Talos Interceptor:

Spearhead:

(Just right click on them and save the images. Believe it or not, Imageshack didn't destroy them with compression.)

Misc:

Alternate Asteroids:
(Gives the asteroid a cooled-magma look)

Dust Clouds:

This gives nebulae a dust cloud look.

Disclaimer: Everything is free to use and modify as you wish, just don't claim anything here as your own.

I'm willing to render off anyone's 3D models as sprites, so long as I don't get swamped with requests (But I doubt I will.). I'll even go over them in photoshop and make them look pretty if you want. But there's one condition: If I make you a ship, it'll be free for others to use, just like everything else in this thread. I just came over here from the Homeworld 2 modding community, and they all had iron grips on their creations. I'd hate to see a similar community arise in Starfarer, as it grows in popularity.

Nice! The starry background is very pretty.

Thanks :)

I took an hour or so an hammered out the Morningstar:

Download all the relevant files here: http://www.mediafire.com/?votsp53a6poo4gk

Note: This isn't set up as a mod. It's intended to be put into an existing one.

Another note: The loadout\stats I've given the ship are obviously just there to serve as loose defaults. Feel free to modify it in any way.

Also, an offer: I'm willing to render off anyone's 3D models as sprites, so long as I don't get swamped with requests (But I doubt I will.). Everything looks fantastic! How did you create the starry backgrounds -- strictly PS?

Made some more backgrounds.

Obviously, these should only be used in a few specific situations--they'll look somewhat silly if the standard parallax stars in the background aren't removed, and look even sillier if there are planets on the map. Asteroids still look alright.

Credit for these goes to NASA's MODIS website (http://modis.gsfc.nasa.gov/), with a bit of editing from me.

Maybe lay this

over some stars to make it look like you are fighting in orbit?

This all looks incredibly cool. Thank you!

Hopefully I will have time to do some modding someday. I'm just utterly swamped making up some sick days this week.  :p

Do you mind telling me how you would go about rendering our 3D models as sprites? I might give it a go :D

I'll probably end up making some like that in the near future, as they'll be needed for a project I'm working on.

I use 3ds max for rendering. However, you can probably use Blender, or any other program that has decent rendering capability. It's been a while, but I remember that all models were rendered from top-down (durr), and they also had a pass of ambient occlusion on them, rendered separately. I didn't use a wireframe overlay on them though--but it comes to me now as a potentially good idea (for making certain areas stick out, etc). Also, I usually slap a quick texture on the ships--reduces a bit of the work in Photoshop.

I render the ship at the same size that it will appear as ingame, I don't do any resizing or anything like that. And yes, I use AA, but I make sure I use a filter that isn't too blurry, and gives a crisp result.

Keep in mind, the final render isn't extremely important--you need to do a fair amount of work in an image editor for sprites to begin to look decent.

For example:

Initial render and AO pass:

Final sprite, after editing:

Ah ok.

What image editor do you use for going over the renders, and when you are making sprites from scratch, what image editor do you use then?
