Why is the concept art better than the finished product? XD
I wouldn't say that. They're 2 different things, remember? Concept art is a concept of what might come about, and as Alex said, no design survives contact with implementation.

Lookin' at that Atlas there, are there any plans to have engine "smog" of sorts along with the flame-jets? I think low-tech ships would look fantastic if they were spewing out an unknown residue as they choked along

There's quite a difference between purely functional concept art and the highly polished promotional "concept art" one tends to see released by game companies. What I'm going to show is absolutely the former with no time spent making it look nice. It's my sketchbook, in other words. But hey, since interest was expressed, I'll show a bit of it. (And maybe I'll just make this into a blog post, at that.) Gallery is here. Click on a thumbnail to view it full size, or something. Edit: OK, thumbnails didn't work. Just click on the link. Also, it looks like you draw the weapons in the hard-point position first and then the turret form

The ion cannon and PD laser look amazing, the ion cannon almost looks like something an aquatic sci-fi race would use.

It sure looks like a hound but upper turret location is not right - it must be on left side of the ship. Definitely awesome looking art.
I tend to flip paintings back and forth to make sure the perspective doesn't drift. Right now it's flipped. (Though I may just put the turret on the wrong side to troll you guys )

Hi David as always exelent art. I absolutly dig your ship designs and artstyle. They are by far the best i have ever seen. Oh and i wanted to ask if we may have some more racial variations for the portraits?

(This is the problem with sneaking in pictures of all your co-workers to the game when all your co-workers are pretty much white dudes -- throws the balance off.)

I have to ask, will any of the future portraits feature metal/bionics on them, like a synthetic eye or other sci-fi goodies like that?

Here, we see the artist at work in his natural habitat, Photoshop, while sipping his prey, coffee, and creating works of art for many different games. But seriously, on the topic of your art, David, what's the game you enjoy making art for the most? It doesn't have to be Starsector unless you sincerly belive it.
