This might have been suggested before but, but if not:
Gravity wells, specifically around planets and other large objects. Perhaps also from artificial sources like an interdiction cruiser or a weapon system (torpedo, mine?) maybe would also be cool.
Mainly though, just having a gravity well around planets and stars would be awesome. I'm sure anyone who's played Super Melee in StarControl II knows why!

This is already in the game, but works a bit differently than in RL.
You will notice that you speed up when you fly over a planet. Basically, gravity will not slow you down, just speed you up. This is an abstraction that demonstrates your captain's skill at using the gravity well slingshot effect.

Ahh I see, interesting. Not as fun as doing it manually IMO, but cool that it is infact represented in some way.

Tried it the "realistic" way first... it just totally did not work given the relative ship scales, speeds, etc. Was surprisingly horrible
