Avoid command
« on: May 30, 2012, 05:48:48 AM »

I'm damn sure this has been suggested before, and it's definitely not my idea, but I'd like to bring it up again.
Please let me tell my ships to avoid certain enemies. I've lost too many ships because my ADD captains decide to get distracted from their orders and go poke at the Onslaught with their little machine guns. I'll deal with that big scary capital when I'm good and ready, not when my captains decide it's time.
Or even let them avoid each other. I want to be able to use my big guns without little frigates flitting around past me when I'm dueling a capital they can't handle. Then they get killed. Sometimes they plant themselves in front of my tachyon lance support.

Yeah, +1 to this idea, since i am having ADHD captains instead of ADD.

And i let them pilot an tempest.  Or four.

If you give them fast ships they become ADHD yes. The Tempests are like insane little puppies.

Yup! I'd like two flavors personally: an avoid for fighters and frigates (interceptor avoid? I dunno) and then a universal avoid (all avoid?). There are some ships I don't mind destroyers poking at but fighters and frigates just get themselves killed.

I'm Pataroo1, and I approve this message. (That is a joke about most ad campaigns in polotics in the USA)

It's nice to know more people are taking notice of the AI's poor self-preservation skills.  The AI simply need a fleshed out threat assessment behavior.

+ for this too... too often I feel like I have to tell all my death prone allies to guard me when really what I want is to keep them concentrated so they don't go soloing ships three classes beyond them. It would give me some peace of mind if I could order ships to avoid enemies outside their weight class.

I really wish all ship captains would act far more self preserving, to give ships a better feeling of durability and the AI more human "i dont want to die" reactions. Right now everything just feels so suicidal compared to me as the player flying a ship.

Most of the time I feel the AI ships are pretty cautious in their actual fighting - its just their target acquisition that makes me cringe sometimes. I don't want frigates soloing capital ships! Then again, if I'm engaged with that capital ship in a cruiser, I do want the frigate to start firing. Its a very situational thing. My personal preference is actually for aggressive ships + an avoid command, but maybe all that can be tweaked with captain personalities to fit our styles.

One command I'd find really useful is "Remain in blob-formation near this ship until I tell you otherwise".
If there was such a command I would no longer have to constantly make new "defend" waypoints to move my ships around.

Isn't that full escort? Or you want to tell a specific ship to do that while letting others roam free?
