Damage boost - Graviton, Mjolnir
« on: May 16, 2012, 12:34:20 PM »

Quick question: does anyone know whether the damage boost to energy is for energy mounts or energy damage types?

Essentially, which is true:

A) Mjolnir gets a damage boost, Graviton beam does not.
B) Graviton gets a damage boost, Mjolnir cannon does not.  <----- Turns out its this one.

Thanks!

Just checked with my Apogee, Graviton Beam does not seem to get any bonus - there's no difference between shooting with 0 flux and almost max flux.
And it agrees with my common sense - it's not about mount, but about the type of damage being dealt, and the way it's being dealt.

Don't care about my *** :>

Mounts - since it's supposed to reflect the state of the ship's power grid, to which energy mounts are hooked up directly. So, B.

That explains why it is so hard to get the Mjolnir to perform. It has nearly the same flux efficiency as the plasma cannon, but A: doesn't burst nearly as hard and B: doesn't get a flux boost.

2x Mjolnir: 1067 dps on shield, similar on armour, costs 1600 flux/sec and 48 OP.

Storm Needler + Hellbore: 1750 dps on shield, 1188 on armour, costs 1050 flux/sec and 44 OP. Actually, much more on heavy armour because it is in bursts of 1500 instead of bursts of 400.

On shields, the latter does 2.7 times as much damage per flux point, and conservatively on armour, it does 1.8 times as much per flux point.

This thread has been a real eye-opener. Very interesting revelation concerning a game quirk I hadn't adequately considered. Thanks, folks.  :)

To be honest, I'd written off the mjolnir cannon many versions ago, just on account of its awful flux rate.

It just gets worse and worse as the rest of the game improves, which is particularly sad since I really like the description and idea of the weapon.

I think it should just be scrapped and replaced by an actual large energy mount with a charge-up-and-fire-big-single-ball-of-hurt feel to it, like a bigger antimatter blaster. We have way too few different energy mounts anyway, especially compared to the huge number of different ballistics.

Mjolnir is great if you have the flux for it, loads of EMP, range, and damage.

Except it's SO much flux...

If you have ships with thick armor, simply use the armor to buffet attacks. Without shields up, you can never overload, so flux never really becomes an issue. Only thing that will happen is a hit to the fire rate

that can be a pretty severe problem

If you read the lore behind the Mjolnir you'd understand why, the Mjolnir still fires shells, it's just they have a micro singularity attached.

EMP damage raises flux

I thought that it used to, but hasn't for a couple versions. I'm pretty sure its just very good at disabling weapons and engines but does no flux damage.
