Battlestar galactica
« on: May 15, 2012, 06:26:26 PM »

Hello all, i am a fan of the series and am going to start on a mod that will include the ships to the best scale possible. i am new to modding this game but have done numerous mods for games like skyrim and new vegas.  i am good with the ship creation but lack the finesse of campaign implementation. i may just wind up creating the sprites for public use.
wish me luck,
any suggestions or good sprite images would be great.

I've done some Starfarer work for a few random sci-fi series (for amusement purposes) and BG happened to be one of them. Send me a PM tomorrow and I'll touch base with you.

Alright ive begun work, but being that my main pc is in repair i cant get much done on a 10 year old computer.  ETA can be in bout 2 weeks.

Another notice is that this is going to be a public sprite mod where im just going to be handing out the ships and maybe some specs once i balance them.

FYI expect these ships to be pretty damn big.

Last is just a quick question of there being some way to get the weapons to appear under the ship, as the pegasus has its bombardment guns mounted subcenter from a side angle.

It's possible to set turrets and hardpoints to be hidden. Which means the weapons are never rendered. Although, with underbelly weapons, it'll look pretty wierd as shots spawn ontop of the ship's sprite.  :P

Give them a firing delay and place them at the sprite's edge? That might work. It would be as if they came from below the ship. Then again, the weapon arcs might turn out looking weird.

I haven't watched BS:G. Only caught it a couple times. It seems interesting enough, but, I need to like, wait for the show to start back at S1.

So I'm gonna presume that the Pegasus is a Battlestar-class.

I want to see a Basestar. Cos those look awesome.

Quick update on a new problem. im currently consulting another string for size and scaling, but the weapons on the ships in the show are quite small, problem is in the game they are quite large.

The decision is now up to you all.

do you want large ships, going to be pretty epic.
Also allows me to get more detailed fighters...
Do you want more guns, just make them smaller.
Allows me to make more realistic firing effects, but it would take more time and....
to make this many guns fire with such small animations and whatnot could impact the game handling, there would be a bunch of oddly balanced guns either way.

Im looking towards the second idea to keep the crap on screen to a minimum, can work out either way since the current size means the viper will look odd at a measly 8 pixels high....could work to my benefit though.

I would think having the ships generally larger than the standard Starfarer ones would be better, considering the smaller number of capital ships (or so I'm assuming, since battlestars do fill all capship roles at once)

Vipers at 8px big would also make for impossibly small hitboxes. Anything non-beam or non-flak is gonna have serious issues hitting those guys.
I'd go for upscaling the ships, but that could create other problems, such as an inability to fit Battlestars or Basestars if they get too big for the refitting screen.
