Spacefaring Songs and Balads

Enjoy! And if you know a few good ones, don’t hesitate to post! Bunch of music here that you youngins might not be familiar with.

’39 – Queen

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Q1yyoe377k

Fairly unknown song by Queen about volunteers who set off on a spaceship to find a new world. When they finally return however, they haven’t aged much, while the earth is now old and grey. The lines: “Though I’m older but a year, your mother’s eyes from your eyes cry to me” are exceptionally beautiful, I think.

Quote
In the year of thirty-nine
Assembled here the volunteers
In the days when lands were few
Here the ship sailed out into the blue and sunny morn
The sweetest sight ever seen
And the night followed day
And the story tellers say
That the score brave souls inside
For many a lonely day
Sailed across the milky seas
Ne'er looked back never feared never cried

Don't you hear my call
Though you're many years away
Don't you hear me calling you
Write your letters in the sand
For the day I'll take your hand
In the land that our grand-children knew

In the year of thirty-nine
Came a ship in from the blue
The volunteers came home that day
And they bring good news
Of a world so newly born
Though their hearts so heavily weigh
For the earth is old and grey
little darlin' well away
But my love this cannot be
Oh so many years have gone
Though i'm older but a year
Your mother's eyes from your eyes cry to me

Don't you hear my call
Though you're many years away
Don't you hear me calling you
Write your letters in the sand
For the day I'll take your hand
In the land that our grand-children knew

Don't you hear my call
Though you're many years away
Don't you hear me calling you
All your letters in the sand
Cannot heal me like your hand
For my life's still ahead, pity me.

Sirius – Clannad

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vctzFJZ2nzk

A fitting song to the Corvus system, I think. Lead by the brightest star (Sirius, standing symbol for the chance on power and wealth) the mighty colonists from earth set off. United at first, by wealth and power. But then, while isolated, they slip into chaos. Cast aside… divided by the sudden scarcity of wealth and power as Corvus is cut off.

Quote
A blind bargain can't you see
In a cloud of secrecy
Voices whispering for they might get heard
Play with fire, be insane
It's a danger game, cast aside
A guiding star leads the way

Sirius, sirius

Our ocean's a red sea
But you won't change your ways
Or move close as the giant stares on
The money and the power unite
Cast aside
A guiding star lights the way

The brightness in this sky
Light years we've tried
As our childrens echoes become lonely cries
The money and the power divide us
Cast aside
A guiding star lights the way

Sirius

And we'll see who cares
For those that dare
The time will tell
Time will tell

Space Truckin’ – Deep Purple

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-w5sE82dKV0

How can you not dig space truckin’?

Quote
We had a lot of luck on Venus
We always had a ball on Mars
Meeting all the groovey people
We've rocked the Milky Way so far
We danced around with Borealice
We're space truckin' round the the stars
Come on let's go Space Truckin'

Remember when we did the moonshot
And Pony Trekker led the way
We'd move to the Canaveral moonstop
And everynaut would dance and sway
We got music in our solar system
We're space truckin' round the stars
Come on let's go Space Truckin'

The fireball that we rode was moving
But now we've got a new machine
Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah the freaks said
Man those cats can really swing
They got music in their solar system
They've rocked around the Milky Way
They dance around the Borealice
They're Space Truckin' everyday
Come on

The Joker – Steve Miller Band

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PmVusVh4TRQ

For you self-lovin’ space cowboys and pirates out there

Quote
Some people call me the space cowboy, yeah
Some call me the gangster of love
Some people call me Maurice
Cause I speak of the pompitous of love

People keep talkin' about me, baby
Say I'm doin' you wrong, doin' you wrong
Well, don't you worry baby
Don't worry
Cause I'm right here, right here, right here, right here at home

Cause I'm a picker
I'm a grinner
I'm a lover
And I'm a sinner
I play my music in the sun

I'm a joker
I'm a smoker
I'm a midnight toker
I get my lovin' on the run
Wooo Wooooo

You're the cutest thing
That I ever did see
I really love your peaches
Want to shake your tree
Lovey-dovey, lovey-dovey, lovey-dovey all the time
Ooo-eee baby, I'll sure show you a good time

Cause I'm a picker
I'm a grinner
I'm a lover
And I'm a sinner
I play my music in the sun

I'm a joker
I'm a smoker
I'm a midnight toker
I sure don't want to hurt no one

Wooo Wooooo

People talk about me, baby
Say I'm doin' you wrong, doin' you wrong
Well, don't you worry baby
Don't worry mama
Cause I'm right here at home

You're the cutest thing
That I ever did see
I really love your peaches
Want to shake your tree
Lovey-dovey, lovey-dovey, lovey-dovey all the time
Come on baby ill show you a good time

The Balad of Serenity – Sonny Rhodes

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lChMyk3EKDA&feature=related

Why did they have to cancel that show? If you haven’t seen it, I recommend you do so!

Quote
Take my love. Take my land. Take me where I cannot stand. I don't care, I'm still free. You can't take the sky from me.
Take me out to the black. Tell em I ain't comin' back. Burn the land And boil the sea. You can't take the sky from me.
Have no place I can be Since I found Serenity. But you can't take the sky from me.

Atlantis - Donovan

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=leI7sfmipuI

Inspired my Antediluvian faction! Atlantean lore rocks!

Quote
The continent of Atlantis was an island which lay before the great flood
in the area we now call the Atlantic Ocean.
So great an area of land, that from her western shores
those beautiful sailors journeyed to the South and the North Americas with ease,
in their ships with painted sails.
To the East Africa was a neighbour, across a short strait of sea miles.
The great Egyptian age is but a remnant of The Atlantian culture.
The antediluvian kings colonised the world
All the Gods who play in the mythological dramas
In all legends from all lands were from fair Atlantis.
Knowing her fate, Atlantis sent out ships to all corners of the Earth.
On board were the Twelve:
The poet, the physician, the farmer, the scientist,
The magician and the other so-called Gods of our legends.
Though Gods they were -
And as the elders of our time choose to remain blind
Let us rejoice and let us sing and dance and ring in the new
Hail Atlantis!
Way down below the ocean where I wanna be she may be,
Way down below the ocean where I wanna be she may be,
Way down below the ocean where I wanna be she may be.
Way down below the ocean where I wanna be she may be,
Way down below the ocean where I wanna be she may be.
My antediluvian baby, oh yeah yeah, yeah yeah yeah,
I wanna see you some day
My antediluvian baby, oh yeah yeah, yeah yeah yeah,
My antediluvian baby,
My antediluvian baby, I love you, girl,
Girl, I wanna see you some day.
My antediluvian baby, oh yeah
I wanna see you some day, oh
My antediluvian baby.
My antediluvian baby, I wanna see you
My antediluvian baby, gotta tell me where she gone
I wanna see you some day
Wake up, wake up, wake up, wake up, oh yeah
Oh glub glub, down down, yeah
My antediluvian baby, oh yeah yeah yeah yeah

In the year 2525 – Zager & Evans

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WhNM2K8cmU8

Catchy song about humanities grim future.

Quote
In the year twentyfive
twentyfive if man is still alive

If woman can survive they may find.
In the year thirtyfive thirtyfive
Ain't gonna need to tell the truth tell no lies

Ev'rything you think do and say is in the pill you took today.
In the year fortyfive fortyfive
You ain't gonna need your teeth won't need your eyes

You won't find a thing to chew
nobody's gonna look at you.
In the year fiftyfive fiftyfive your arms are hangin' limp at you side

Your legs got nothin' to do
some machines doin' that for you.
In the year sixtyfive sixtyfive
Ain't gonna need no husband won't need no wife

You'll pick your son
pick your daughter too
From the bottom of a long glass tube.
In the year seventyfiveten
If God's a-coming he oughta make it by then

Maybe he'll look around himself and say:
Guess it's time for the judgement day.
In the year eightyfiveten God is gonna shake his mighty head

He'll either say I'm pleased where man has been
Or tear it down and start again.
In the year ninetyfive ninetyfive
I'm kind a wond'rin' if man is gonna be alive

He's taken everything this old earth can give
And he ain't put back nothin'.
Now it's been tenthousand years
man has cried a billion tears
For what he never knew - now man's reign is through.
But through eternal night the twinkling of starlight
So very far away - maybe it's only yesterday.
In the year twentyfive twentyfive if man is still alive
In the year thirtyfive thirtyfive . . .

Space Oddity – David Bowie

Sitting in a tin can!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xcyuKUtgyZ8&feature=related

Quote
Ground control to major Tom
Ground control to major Tom
Take your protein pills and put your helmet on
(Ten) Ground control (Nine) to major Tom (Eight)
(Seven, six) Commencing countdown (Five), engines on (Four)
(Three, two) Check ignition (One) and may Gods (Blastoff) love be with you.

This is ground control to major Tom, you've really made the grade
And the papers want to know whose shirts you wear
Now it's time to leave the capsule if you dare.

This is major Tom to ground control, I'm stepping through the door
And I'm floating in a most peculiar way
And the stars look very different today
For here am I sitting in a tin can far from the world
Planet Earth is blue and there's nothing I can do.

Though I'm past one hundred thousand miles,
I'm feeling very still
And I think my spaceship knows which way to go
Tell my wife I love her very much, she knows
Ground control to major Tom, your circuits dead,
There's something wrong
Can you hear me, major Tom?
Can you hear me, major Tom?
Can you hear me, major Tom?
Can you...
Here am I floatin' 'round my tin can far above the world
Planet Earth is blue and there's nothing I can do.

I dislike Skrillex as he doesn't make the dubstep I liked him for

Excision though... haha!

2112 by rush. Quite literally an epic about a system similar to Corvus. Oh, and it's 20 minutes long.
