Hello to the Starfarer community
« on: July 31, 2011, 03:29:14 PM »

Hello Everyone,

I Found out about Starfarer randomly while browsing the internet looking for reviews on Space Pirates and Zombies. I was hooked by the first few screenshots and videos on youtube I watched. And now I'm more excited about this game than I was for SPAZ when I first heard about it. Now I havn't bought Starfarer yet, but I hopefully will be very soon. From what I have seen, the devs are very involved with the community and talk on a regular basis with everyone here. I think thats great!

I guess I'm a little shy about putting my money down for a game that isnt finished yet, as I've seen not so pretty things happening with a few other indy titles, such as minecraft (I've grown disilusioned with Notch's direction for it), and cortex command.

So i'm just wondering from everyone on this forum, and even Alex  ;) Why I should buy this game, and is it definitely going to be fnished?

Looking foward to chatting with you all and watching this great looking game's continued development!

If you really don't want to part with your money, you could always wait for the next build (or the one after) to see how good the new features are (ship outfitting, campaign mode, etc.) before you decide whether you like the sound of it.

I, for one, have already got my $10 worth out of it, and as development continues, I'll get more and more enjoyment out of it at no further cost. If you buy it now, you can enjoy playing it while you wait for the next build; on the other hand, if you wait too long, you might find that the price has risen to reflect the extra development.

I don't think the devs can guarantee that it will be finished, because that depends on how many people are willing to pay for the game. The fact that Alex quit his job and is doing this full time should give you some idea of his level of commitment.

Hi Jerry, welcome to the forum! Happy to hear you're liking how Starfarer is shaping up.

Erebos pretty much covered all the bases here :)  I don't have a lot to add, aside from saying that I've got every intention - and then some - of seeing Starfarer through to completion.

Welcome to the forums!

I know what you mean re: Minecraft. I still enjoy it and play it every few weeks for a bit with the wife, but I share your feelings about its direction.

Starfarer is great for where it is development-wise, but mostly I look forward to the larger sandbox (and all the mods for the release version). You've got the right idea in taking an interest in it (great taste). This is definitely a game worth watching.

SPAZ is a cool game. I might fire it up again here tonight, actually. There's a lot to like about it, though I find it gets fairly grindy after awhile. But hey! We can never have too many space games, right? That's one of the reasons I hope SPAZ and Starfarer are both smash hits -- to encourage more talented developers to build games in an under-represented genre. I mean, we have enough match-3 games.

I hope Starfarer grows into the game you want it to become. In the meantime, the devs here are very open to questions and suggestions. And, as Erebos has already stated, clearly committed to making this game as great as they can.

Sorry if I come off sounding like a fanatic!  :D

Hi Alex,
Nice to make your aquaintance! I am glad to hear about your intentions, and your enthusiasm about your project is evident from all your posts i've seen. I didn't know you'd quit your job in order to go fulltime on this. Kudos, and you've got my support!

Couple of questions about pre-ordering,
1) After pre-ordering, do I have to un-install the previous Starfarer version before downloading the new one? Or does it update automatically?
2) I read there was a few problems with your online merchant (not paypal, the other one) for the transactions, but I couldn't find any info as to if that was still a problem or not. (maybe i'm blind and it was right there)

Hi SeaBee,
Space games have been sorely lacking these days, I agree! I gotta say, everyone on these forums sound like fanatics about Starfarer, and I can't say that's a bad thing! In fact, I wouldn't mind joining in the fanaticism myself a little bit! :p

Hi Erebos,
Yeah you have excellent points on all counts. It is a lot cheaper to get it now, and from what I've seen, it certainly looks like a jolly good time for only 10 bucks! :D
I do think indy games are definitely the way to go more and more nowadays. Most big name titles are only 10-20 hours of gameplay and then you're done, and at the price of an arm and a leg at that. I would much rather support an Indy developer who actually cares about the product than a corporation on a schedule.

I'm totally with you on this. The big developers can throw ridiculous amounts of money at a project, but they're beholden to the publishers and shareholders, and are thus reluctant to try anything that lacks a proven lowest-common-denominator appeal. I think it would ultimately be to their benefit to throw a bit of money at some small in-house teams and say "Here, go make something innovative," then further develop anything that works well, but I don't see that happening.

In the meantime, I'll be supporting the creative freedom of independent developers. Let's not forget that Elite and UFO/XCOM were each developed by only a couple of guys.

Hi from me as well Jerry!

Your questions:
1) No you do not have to uninstall, just re-download and install the new build. It does not update automatically.
2) The vast majority of people have had no problems with our merchant. We use BMTMicro they are actually a pretty big name, and have been extremely helpful whenever there have been any real issues. Which to my knowledge there haven't been.

Anyway, if you feel like checking the game out further before getting it, we have a wiki you can peruse (small but growing) and a IRC chat room. Feel free to hang out.

See you around!

Hi Ivaylo!
Thanks for the answers! I've just pre-ordered, and the process was smooth. Just waiting for the code now :)

I'll come back and post my first impressions upon playing the game!

After playing for a few hours, here are my first impressions.

1) Gameplay feels a bit fast, but that's probably due to my lack of experience, and not really knowing all the ins and outs yet.
2) Ships and animations are great, I love all the sounds and explosions. The lasers and missiles are some of the best I've seen.
3) Random battles are lots of fun, having to deal with whatever hand you're dealt.
4) Steering is just like I would've thought it to be, in space. Movement plus shields and weapons systems control seem to mesh well together. Nothing awkward about the controls for me so far.

It definitely has that space sim kind of feel to it, which is just what I was looking for. The battles feel epic and the ships feel large and imposing. The learning curve is definitely steep, as I am constantly getting my butt handing to me by the AI, but i'm loving it. Looking forward now to playing the other missions and trying some mods, And I can't wait for the campaign mode!

My friends will be hearing about this one for sure! :D
