Oh wow! were they made in gimp too? if not what and how?!

Although i must say it does remind me of a blender guru tutorial :D

I actually used Paint.net. I'm pretty sure that it was free. There was a tutorial on the Paint.net forums if you poke around a little. I kinda messed up a little when i did that because I made the resolution like 2x what it was supposed to be. Oh well.

Ooooh, thats cool.

I think i can see what you mean about the resolution; the light parts of the planet are nearly block colour.

Ever tried using Gimp? its a lot like photoshop, but free and IMO a lot better.

I dunno. I do a lot of photo editing, but that was the first graphics stuff I've done in Paint.net. I learned how to photo edit on Paint.net so I'm not so sure if I want to shift over. Does GIMP support actions? That would be a lifesaver on timelapses, startrails, and maybe even hockneys.

I've only just started myself, but gimp can be used to make A lot of very good high quality images.
