Though I did find out, if you have less than a skeleton crew for a freighter - making it inactive -  you still get the cargo capacity it provides without actually having to deploy it in battle.

That also comes with a reduced repair rate for your fleet after battles. Less of an issue if you use high-tech, but still.

Yep, that is a little odd.
IMO unmanned ships should not contribute to fleet cargo/fuel capacity.

Not exactly, the cargo's still there in the designated bays, it doesn't need to looked after like makeshift cargo bays.

What difference does manning a ship make to its fuel storage capacity? Or it's cargo bay? Does all that empty storage space just magically disappear?

It's not like you have to watch that stuff, fuel is just safe inside of fuel tanks, cargo is safe if its locked in place, you don't need people sitting on it.

Disagree. I always thought of not having enough crew to field a ship in combat was just that: you don't have enough crew to take the ship in to combat. I'd imagine it would only take a couple of crewmen to fly a ship out of combat, so why not have the extra storage capacity?
