I mean, literally, in binary (or hex) the thing is just 00000000000000000000000000000000000000... on and on and on. Not sure how or why it happened.

Incidentally, there was a BSOD a minute later, but that just was my derpy graphics beta drivers (which do that a lot, and was long enough after I saved that it shouldn't have caused the issue, but they are the only ones that support SLI on my cards properly to start with so.... yeah), and should not have been related.

Fortunately you have it keep backups of the save file as I discovered, which is very nice  

I'll just edit in the 10000 creds and 2 ships I made since that save and will be off and conquering the system again.

Turns out the backups are corrupted too, also just a bunch of null charactes about 80% of the way in

Ouch. That seems utterly impossible under normal circumstances - I'm just going to blame this on something going horribly wrong just prior to the BSOD.

Heh, well the backups were corrupted, as said in my edit, so I started a new game and added in 160,000 credits so that I could buy back most of the ships I had previously. (though I still need to capture a new lasher and enforcer to have my old fleet back)

Oh, crap, didn't see your edit. Weird. Btw, you could pretty easily edit data/factions/player.faction to give yourself whatever you want to start.
