Will Starfarer be distributed on Steam?
« on: April 29, 2012, 12:33:56 PM »

Hey y'all,
I was wondering; does anyone know if the full release of Starfarer is going to be distributed through Steam or some other platform?

Yes this is planned,
but it takes quite some time and Steam refused the (0.3*?) beta.

So most likely after the full release

Neither of these two statements is true. It's not "planned", strictly speaking - Steam has to accept it first, so I wouldn't feel comfortable using the word "planned" to describe the situation. At this point, we haven't talked to them about it, so they certainly haven't refused it, either :)

Take a look at this thread for an answer.

Well, considering steam has accepted crappier games before, why not?
BUT they have accepted crappier games over better games in the past, yeah :(

I would upvote in a second. Just one question, in case Starfarer actually goes into Steam: Could we concievably use our existing codes to registed the game on steam without purchasing again? And if not how are existing users that want the game on Steam would register it?

It's my understanding that generally you (the dev) can work out a deal with Steam where they'll issue steam codes for existing players. But that's not something that I can actually promise, for obvious reasons.

Greenlight is active now! Pretty sure devs are putting a page together for their game even when its still in dev!

You gonna make one, Alex?

I don't want it to be only distributed on steam, I'd also like to see it distributed on Desura, GamersGate, and Direct2Drive.  I'd avoid Games for Windows Live, Origin, and Impulse.  I want to see more distributors because I don't want steam to have a monopoly.

Why avoid distributors? The more people selling your game, the more people that are going to buy it. I don't exactly love any of the above (mostly because Microsoft, EA, and Gamestop all annoy the hell out of me), but it would still seem like a bad idea to purposely avoid a distributor.

Thing is that those sites have access to advertising potential Alex and his team have not.  People also like the convenience of not needing several accounts at several different places.

GFWL requires you to make your game use the GFWL platform which does not play nice with other distribution systems and is mandatory if I recall.  Origin because of their bad customer service and the fact that they're up for sale and that their having a class action lawsuit filed against them makes the company's situation look very poor and I doubt anyone wants to buy a game and then lose their game because EA collapses or has to cut costs by cutting Origin's services, also similarly origin's digital distribution platform doesn't play nice with other ones.  Gamestop's impulse because it's been having a lot of transitional problems since being bought-out, most noticeably more bugs and less customer service.
