PC Data Backups
« on: April 30, 2012, 10:11:26 PM »

Anyone have tips for me?

I really need to make more backups of my stuff, anyone got better ideas then just buying more harddisks or cd/dvd's?

i forgot what it's called, but there is this system where it only back's up changed files, this makes for faster and smaller backups. Certainly if you want to keep older ones, cause only changed files are saved and not all.

I think the program was called Cobian backup or something

You can do that with the free SyncToy from Microsoft, assuming you're running Windows. I have that set to back up everything I care about to an external hard drive every time I log in to the system, and it only does what's changed.

You can use dropbox. Its a free cloud storage service that basically allows you to keep your files safe by uploading them and you can also set it to sync files across different computers.
Create an account at dropbox then set a folder at your desctop as "valuable" or something and set it to automatically upload the context of the folder on dropbox. You get 2GB of storage for free so you can keep your
most valuable files up to date at all times. Its really easy (even though I probably described it badly). Works for mac as well.

https://www.dropbox.com/

(if you sign in through this you will give me 500mb but its up to you which of the two links you use)

Hope that helps.

2 GB is, not anywhere close to what I need. But thanks though.

I'm a bit hesitant about cloud storage in general as well.

 :P I've got about 7+ Terra-bytes to backup.  ::)

Yeah i use dropbox to backup my current code for my current project, so i always have a backup of the most recent version.
but it's horrible for version control or big files
