how do you setup a SMF forum?

As per title, in asking for advice on how to setup a SMF forum. I've got the website sorted out (free with no ads :D) and that sort of thing, I'm just asking for advice on setup.
I've read their manual on how to setup forums, bit eventually, it didn't give me much basic ground.
