Ode to the Venture...
« on: April 12, 2012, 11:37:02 PM »

...the most useful ship in the galaxy.

Sure, it's not the fastest, nor the best-armed, but it has:

-Massive personnel, cargo, and fuel capacity
-25 hangar capacity
-1 flight deck
-PLENTY of armor and hull
-360 degree flak coverage

While yes, it's a bit undergunned, it can still be quite devastating with a pair of Harpoon pods and some Sabots. Also, the fact that it has so few weapon slots means that you can stock up on hull mods (more missiles!) and actually use that medium energy slot without overloading.

In my most recent game I decided to go for a more "carrier" setup, and have ended up buying two Ventures and capturing two more. A crapload of Piranhas and Broadswords picked up via battles along with three sets of Wasps, a Gladius wing, and a Thunder wing, and you can pretty much take on the world.

here here! i always find that the venture is the first cruiser i go for, and often the first ship i try to buy.

Also I totally had the name BEFORE the cruiser.

eh,

i generally go for one after i get a few destroyers / cruisers with more hangar space, 25 is..tiny if you want to get the more useful fighters in amounts greater than two.

Agreed!  The Venture is one of my favorite ships to torpedo!

I agree with the OP! I'm a Venture fanboy through and through. An incredibly versatile ship with a good weapons package: if you have no fear of missiles put some big guns on instead of flak and really watch it tear through stuff! You need less escorting than you'd expect thanks to a nice strong shield.

Its always the first flight deck ship I go for unless I'm trying to challenge myself. A venture will give fire support and front line repairs to fighters while enemy cruisers hit it; condors die if you sneeze too hard at them.

And thats only in combat: it is the second most FP efficient freighter behind the Atlas and the second most FP efficient in hangar space behind the Astral (just barely!).

On top of it all its cheap :P

i put flak mainly not so it can protect itself from missiles, but moreso so that when my fighters return to repair / rearm, they aren't chased down and killed by any pursuing enemy fighters. i find that the medium energy gives it a decent enough kick to help out in combat.

Haha, I actually think it looks cool, though the weapon mounts aren't my favorite.

Most of my own ship designs come out looking like flying bathtubs, so I dig this look, heh.

25 hangar space is tiny? ??? What (non-modded) ships that aren't capitals have more than 20?

:P It's butt ugly though. *runs*

She may not look like much, but she's got it where it counts, kid. I've made a lot of special modifications myself.

Really, it reminds me a bit of a '70s tractor-trailer with engines.

Honestly, with the upcoming accident mechanics and the eventual inter-system travel, this is pretty much the perfect swiss army ship, since the huge cargo, fuel, and personnel capacity means that you don't need to haul freighters, personnel transports, and Drams around; and one Venture is a hell of a lot tougher than any of those non-combat ships.

i agree here i expect when accidents and traveling come in the venture's extreme versatility will make it more of a favorite ship for more people. and as for looks? i personally feel it looks like a mining vessel should it just feels right too.

Meh... The Venture is quite versatile but it is very easy to kill. Just have tempest or even an Omen pull up in front and distract it will you take a long route around the rear and shred it.

That's the general idea for killing any ship, though...

I dunno.  I learned the hard way that even though it's clunky, that Mining Blaster on the stock Venture isn't something to be sneezed at.   That thing can rip you a new one and the AI uses it pretty well.

Yeah, the mining blaster is something to be wary of - the missiles can really rip you a new one as well. Put HV drivers on the wings and it will chase away tempests and snipe fighters. Don't get me wrong - it has far less firepower than other cruisers. But for a carrier its pretty sweet.

I disagree very much that they are easy to kill; it has more armor than half of the capital ships! Nothing really shreds them - I can't find the thread right now but someone was talking about how they had one sandwiched between two Conquest broadsides and it still took about half a minute to kill.
