Reinforcement Armor
« on: April 05, 2012, 01:54:02 PM »

I feel that some of my supposedely durable ships get destroyed way too easily. I think that, as a replacement for a weapon slot on ships, extra armor should be added. The Armor types could be resistant to energy weapons, giving you another couple seconds before they breach through the armor and hit your hull. Others could completely deflect SOME small ballistic weapons, barely scratching the ship on those spots the plates are equipped. There could also be a type of hybrid plate that could be a little of both.

Of course, while it's not needed, it'd be nice to have.

It would else be pretty awesome to be able to eject spent armour plates at the enemy and make a break for it!

Though i would imagine that these added armour plates would ramp up repair times and slow the ship down quite a bit too, which could make its nessisary to "drop" all your armour when a fight goes bad in order to make your escape, which would also incur longer repair times.

Are we forgetting about the "Heavy Armor" and "Reenforced Bulkheads" mods? Those already take a big chunk out of you're offensive firepower.

As for the different types of armor, I'd rather have to worry about weapon statistics than defensive statistics. This might be because I prefer to act rather than react, but different armor types seems needlessly complicated. I can see it already: "Oh, a pirate fleet! Better go back to my refit screen AGAIN and load up those anti-ballistic armor plates. Hey, now I'm about to fight a TT fleet! Back to the refit screen to refit ALL of my ships with counter-energy plates again."

Actually...keep it generic.

Every ship starts out like it normally would with armor.  But there's an option for "Eject armor plates" during battle that would let you shed your (Hopefully) damaged armor in exchange for a decent speed and maneuverability bonus.  It would allow some bigger ships that have taken huge armor damage a way to increase their speed for a getaway.

The catch is that after the battle, if you ejected your armor, it treats your ship as having it's armor 100% destroyed for repair purposes.  So while jettisoning your armor could save your ship, it will take time and supplies for the crew to re-attach the armor.

Space Pirates and Zombies did this pretty well.  You could jettison armor for a quick getaway or some extra maneuverability, but if you did, you were without armor until you went in for a refit.

Then when an Onslaught jettisons it's armor, all hell breaks loose behind the large chunks of metal smashing into a ship right behind it. ;D
Jettison the Armor does sound like a good idea, a good trade-off.
