Medusa has to be the most versatile ship in the game for me... it can be equipped to handle both fighters and capital ships at the same time, has good speed and handling, and decent armor.

Tempest... it's so fast, it's like a fighter with firepower of frigate/destroyer.  I gave it 2 pulse laser(?) and it zaps around all over the map blasting away.  Only fault is that when shields are off, it's very fragile... I lost one because AI didn't keep its shield up when the enemy capital ship it was shooting at blew up and it ate the splash damage.

I went from a fresh start to the largest cap fleet in the game flying only the Hyperion.  I really hate flying cap ships, as it's entirely boring and most often the computer does just fine at it.  Meanwhile, a properly fitted Hyperion can challenge almost anything on the field.  Exceptions for the biggest Caps and cruisers simply due to the shields being so strong.  Although I find that running around with a wasp escort and 3 wings of bombers nearby is more than enough for any single ship.  Especially if you can distract the guns of an onslaught while the bombers make their run.

That being said, my current favorite setup is the hyperion with 2 of the cruisers (the ones that look like the big version of the wolf, I forget the name) fitted with lances and LRMS.  I put the fire support in the back near a goal and fly the Hyperion in to scout (with wasp wing as cover).  And anything that challenges me gets zapped from afar.  Such fun, but it won't work on cap ships.  I need a bigger lance....

it's obvious... the hyperion...
it might be the best ship in the game (size/use comparison)
i've spent so many time in this thing... alone, without other ships to help you against destroyers... carrier groups or even cruisers
doesn't matter...
equiped with 2 Pulse lasers as offense
2 burst PD lasers
and 2 of those yellow (2 shot) torpedo racks
you are invincible... missiles can't even get close and you outrange a lot of weapons while blasting at them,
only limit is that it's hard to support shield + 2 pulse lasers

Pulse lasers take up too much flux for how much damage they put out, IMO. That's why I put on antimatter guns instead :)

Also saves 2 slots for more vents/capacitors

Anti-matter's too specialized. Pulse has longer range and SUSTAINED attack. The DPS of both are pretty similar but a miss with Anti-matter means a lot of flux for no gain. Also, ever tried to hit fighters with Anti-matter blaster?  ;D

The only major advantage AM blaster has is that it's small mount.

The Apogee is easily my favorite, being so well-rounded. I just wish I had more the option of more weapon configurations, to be able to separately control each of those weird asymmetric weapons. It bothers the living crap out of me that I cannot easily swap between the Pilum and the Harpoon missiles. More weapon keys to be added in the next update, maybe?

Yes, it is highly effective ;D.

Different strokes, different star-faring warships.

Don't underestimate the value of burst damage. For ships with limited hardpoints and turrets, an antimatter gun can make a world of difference. There is also value in forcing your enemy into higher flux ratings in a shorter period of time, and the AM blaster being a small mount means you can have broadsides of the things, which is EXTREMELY dangerous, for example, if you wanted to turn the Odyssey into a closer range brawler (which you can).

My favorite is the hammerhead, without a doubt. Though I haven't tried too many, because the Hammerhead is already everything I could ever want.

Fast enough (even faster with Augmented engines), decent shield, two frontal missile launchers, two frontal guns, and four PD spots.

On half damage, I usually ram my enemy with it because it's shield is pretty amazing at half damage. Though it seems like 100% damage makes that strategy much more risky (though there was this time where I rammed a corpse of a ship into the enemy... ;D). Otherwise, I unleash dual Sabots on my enemy, shattering their puny shields while simultaneously getting in close with the main guns. Just like that they're overloaded, and they've got armor damage.

With all PD spots armed, you can put out very serious PD fire at the direct front of the ship. 4 burst PD lasers=3 destroyed missiles if they're in a row. In addition, they can all go on the offensive against the target in front of you.

I usually can cause very serious damage with that ship. I love it to bits.

SQW is right, this the pulse laser fits my needs waaay better because of just that, the fighters...
it's kind of a personal problem but i usually fight a lot of battles alone... and if the enemy got carriers
you better destroy the whole fighter wing before it can retreat to the carrier... not possible with AM

also i can only shoot a few shots from behind my shield without getting over capacity... with 2 shots of AM i'm too close

and don't forget the longer range, my pulse laser outranges most weapons... i can kill a lot of destroyers just by sitting slightly
out of range and killing them from afar

as for the flux... when i have my shields down i can shoot for... maybe 15? seconds before reaching max flux
but even then i can continue shooting with 1 gun

Also looks real nifty. I have a lot of love for the Hammerhead too. I just wish its flux capacity wasn't so tiny.

P.S. 190 top speed is a lie - I've gotten it to 255 in game.

That's because you captured nav buoy which gives all your ships extra speed, or you are considering the extra speed buff that every ship gets when they are not using shield and have zero flux.

With improved thrusters, a Tempest gets 270 with shields down.

At this time lasher class I roll with three of them

Assault, Support, and Defense

I control the Assault due to the missiles, Support has the missiles to take the shields down then I fire the missiles to take the hull

Defence is just... well doing something maybe just there for looks

I do ever so adore the Medusa-class. It's basically Starfarer's USS Defiant, innit? Small, maneuverable, durable, and packs a hell of a punch. I tossed the AM blasters and installed IR pulse lasers in their place in addition to the other two pulse lasers already on it for some awesome rapid fire capability. Not so great against big ships, but excellent for taking care of smaller ships and screening my own big scary stompy cruisers from missiles while they do their thing.
