The - of editing
« on: August 17, 2020, 12:05:24 PM »

So i bought this game a week ago and immediately started editing the settings.json and installing 40 mods

I am now reinstalling due to poor judgement on my part.

P.S. Its hard to learn this game when there are 300+ additional ships and 500+ weapons and nexerelin.

Welcome to the forum!

It is nothing strange in what you described. Vanilla itself is pretty complicated and requires decent time to understand all the mechanics.

I suggest you to start a new game with no factions mods and no ships/weapons packs. You can optionally leave Nex and some QoL mods. And a libs, off course.

There really should be a warning screen about mods when you first launch the game. The amount of times I've had to explain new players why playing with mods immediately is a bad idea is in triple digits probably by now.

Don't listen to what others are saying here, forget Nexerelin, it's a terrible idea to have your first experience with it. Learn pure vanilla first trust me.

I do not wish to be "others are saying here", so some clarification: I do not use Nex by myself and agreed vanilla should be first run. Just do not wish to disturb the wasp's nest with cursed words "remove Nex - it's bad to you".

My best advice is: this isn't Skyrim. You don't need to fix the base game.
For a beginner, I'd recommend only the autosave mod, because the base game doesn't have this functionality.

Nex is fine, but it has this annoying tendency to just kill factions off while you aren't looking, so now you have to start over or give a colony to that faction and then babysit it, until they can survive on their own.

I think Nex is better left for a later run. There's a lot of new ways to get screwed by diplomatic events and invasions and stuff, and a lot of new stuff to manage with your faction. It just adds a lot of complexity for a first time player IMO.

Nex is fine

Nothing to see here. Nex is flawless and every player should use it  ;)

Nex isn't my problem, i edited the *** out of the settings file.

I think editing the settings is what did it.

if theres a clean settings.json around id gladly replace mine with it.

Anyway its a fun game regardless.

Some settings are ripe for changing and others cause issues. Here is my small personal settings mod:

{
   "enableUIStaticNoise":false,
   "enableShipExplosionWhiteout":false,

   "minCombatZoom":1.0,
   "maxCombatZoom":2.0,

   "playerMaxLevel":99,

   "minPirateBases":0,
   "maxPirateBases":2,

   "minLPBases":0,
   "maxLPBases":2,

   "processMessagesWhileSavingOrLoading":false,
}

That last setting in particular helps with mouse clicks causing game crashes while the game is busy saving.
The # of bases arguably makes the game a little easier; at least the pirate raid part of it. Since LP sabotage currently is bugged, LP bases are not as much a priority target.

I would also recommend you play the vanilla game for a while and get deep into it. There's a lot of stuff to do there, mods are really just for weapon and ship variety.

When you do add mods, I recommend sticking to a curated minimum like: Blackrock Driveyards, Dassault-Mikoyan, Diable Avionics, Interstellar Imperium, Shadowyards, Ship & Weapon Pack, Starship Legends, Tiandong Heavy Industries, Underworld. As well as any utility mods you might want.

This is why some of the settings could be moved to in-game settings, like bigger map size (500 may not be big enough) or game speed (if not for this, I probably would uninstall the game for combat being agonizingly slow).  Even 2f is a little on the slow side.  2.5f or 3f are ideal, but there are side-effects when game speed is faster than 2f.  2f is still slower than normal speed of other space games.

Combat speed multiplier is the only thing I edit from settings.json.  I really do not want to edit the settings.json at all if I can help it.

"playerMaxLevel":99,

Why not 103?

Because it takes forever to even get to level 80. The highest I ever managed to reach was 76.

The levels get exponentially much harder to obtain, to the point that there is a mod called SkilledUp to fix that.
