Escape Velocity revival - 2D space RPG on Kickstarter
« on: May 05, 2020, 01:47:28 PM »

Back in the 90’s, Ambrosia Software released a series of space RPG / trading / combat games, very similar to Starsector, called Escape Velocity. The creator of the second game, EV Override, is now running a Kickstarter campaign to remake/remaster the game for modern platforms, starting with Mac OS X, Windows, and Linux.

Aside from the base game, the remake of Override will be compatible with existing fan-made mods (which there are already decades of, including some fan scenarios that are full-blown games in and of themselves), and it's also designed to be easily and extensively moddable.

For those who are interested in checking it out, contributing, or spreading the word, here’s a link to the Kickstarter campaign: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/cosmicfrontier/cosmic-frontier-override/

Oh, neat!  Thanks for the link; I wouldn't have noticed this otherwise.

Not gonna lie, that's not a very compelling Kickstarter presentation.

I played EV Nova and really liked it, but someone coming to this without a ton of context won't think much of it.  Most KS usually demo what the new and improved graphics will be, not some low poly render and 30 year old screen caps...

They actually mentioned that in the description - that part of the appeal of EV and EVO was that it was relatively simple to make ships that fit into the base game, and that this helped with modding.

I can attest that this was true - EV and EVO had a lot of interesting mods.  EVN, which made all of its ships much higher quality graphically... did not.
