'Is this ship balanced-ish?' thread
« on: March 21, 2012, 05:38:26 PM »

Read it somewhere a few days ago. I think it's a good idea, so I went ahead and made it. Some ships in some mods are massively strong, some intentionally so. So yeah, basically? Post a ship refit screen or something and your intention with the design, then other people give their thoughts and/or suggestions on the matter. Simple enough.

I'll kick it off with three of my own to get the ball rolling. Images linked to save bandwidth for people since there's no spoiler tags for some reason:

Made for a friend who just started, so it's a little strong. Made it to be about as good as an Aurora, but more specialised so the AI doesn't do as well. Neither does he, unfortunately :P
The two light needlers at the front and the two IR Pulse lasers are in universal slots. Everything except the four tac lasers at the back points forwards, with arcs between 90 and 150 degrees. Longest range weapon it can use is triple HVel cannons, so it's limited to getting up close and personal for the most part. The OP is a little higher than I'd like, but I wanted to give him some leeway in hull mods.

This one I'm not sure about. It's classed as a cruiser so it doesn't benefit from the capital class hull mods. Basically does what an eagle does, but even more extreme. Completely useless when piloted by the AI on account of it being flimsier than most destroyers. Really good shield, but overloads quick if it actually uses all it's weapons, and if it overloads it dies pretty much instantly. Fast as hell for a cruiser, but turns very slightly faster than a paragon. Weapon arcs are exactly the same as for the eagle, with the added large universal slot having a 140 degree arc.The pulse lasers and the rear tachyon are in the universal slots.

This thing's clearly too strong, but I'm not sure how to fix it as yet. Supposed to be roughly on par with the paragon. Definitely need to tighen the weapon arcs, they're all above 150 'cept the hardpoints at the front. One thing is that with the fairly light (Except the lances) loadout there, it can't actually fill its slots. One of the missile hardpoints is empty.

The main attributes you need to check for a balanced ship is:

number of OPs;
amount of slots, sizes, types and arcs (the arcs of its main DPS weapons);
flux dissp amount.

From here on you can go into a more detailed info like:

armor amount;
turn speed;
shield size;
ship speed.

Ofcourse you also depends on how much the ship will cost, more costly ships should have better stats, to balance those a good way is to go vs a higher class cheapest ship that doesnt have an obvious des-advantage like slow turn rate (since its fighting a faster ship)

you do realize that the first and last one you posted are my ship sprites?
pretty sure you didn't make them.
since I did

also the nevermore is was made a bit differently for it's loadout. the two rearmost turrets are designated as medium. and the large one above those is rear facing, also there is only one medium missle hardpoint in the center, all the other points are energy

Yeah, I know, wasn't trying to claim such. Sorry if it came over like that. I'm mostly on about the number stuff. Probably should have specified.

Though you pointing out the back two are supposed to be medium is actually really helpful, given the main problem was five tachyon lances being mental. Rear facing would help too, so it's not such a battering ram.

here, this is what we came up with for it, edit as needed.

the hull file,
the variant file,
and the ship data file.

Calodine, all three ships that you posted look somewhat imbalanced indeed.

A good way to try and balance a ship is to use the ship.data.CSV from the vanilla game as a tool. copy and paste your new ship string in the appropriate hull-size section, and just compare what you make with what the vanilla ships already have in stats.

For example, take the Eagle variant that you made and compare it to the original:

double the speed
almost double the OP
best shield in the game
INU on a cruiser with 5 (!) large mounts
more flux than a Conquest

You see the pattern there? No amount of hull, armor or turning rate nerf can compensate with that.

Also, the fact that the AI is not utilizing the ship at all is really a downer if you think about it (since half of the fun is flying against a ship that you made).  ;)

Yeah, it's not supposed to be a cruiser so much as a light capital ship. It's only still classed as a cruiser so it doesn't get the benefits of a proper cap ship. Only reason it uses the eagle sprite at all is because when I made it, I didn't know about the sprite threads :P

Hi, not sure if I should be posting this in a new thread, but well see..

So, I made a ship based on Sprite 51ppycup did, and I'd like your guys opinion on it's balance.

If you want to try it yourself here's a zip file;
http://www.mediafire.com/?cc4nk6mi8lkf4ts
(just plop the folder down in your mods folder, unfortunately, it will not be added to game by itself, you either A) need to hack it into your own save, or B) add a couple variants (included) to the faction file)

It has a bunch of Universal slots mostly because I'm not sure what to make it..

Depending on it's variant, it can be a complete nightmare to face.. and you will NOT be killing one solo in a frigate anytime soon.
