Deciding on fleet composition!
« on: January 14, 2020, 01:50:56 PM »

So, I've got an Eagle, a Venture, a Fast Carrier, a Condor, a Tempest, a Harbinger, a Memnon, a Mora, a Conquest, a Afflicter and an Apogee as well as a number of cargo and fuel ships. I'm planning on adding a BattleCarrier as soon as I find one, but trying to decide on adding an Onslaught because I happened upon one at a shop and even though I feel like my fleet is pretty decked out, I feel like more is also better. Thoughts? Also, what are some of the compositions you're fond of?

Depends on how much money you have. I think it might improve your fleet, but I would rather add more line cruisers, or a paragon if you can find one. You might also consider that capitals will slow you by one burn which is a disadvantage. I like to hang out on burn 8 until I have 5-8 good cruisers before going for capitals.

That's fair. Sitting on around 600,000 right now, and it's gonna be about 400,000, but I've got over 500,000 in some missions I'm about to finish. Didn't think about the speed, though. That's annoying. Hmm. I was thinking about just stacking cruisers. Seems legit, but I haven't tried it yet.

You can "stack" cruisers.  There's really nothing in the game that prevents you from massing frigates, or destroyers or cruisers, other than ship cap and the size of fleets you want to fight. A long time ago a guy was posting pure frigate fleets that were taking out some of the battlestation. It only becomes troubling if you fight these massive bounty/expedition fleets and you can't finish the battle without withdrawing come cruisers. However, theoretically if you stack something ridiculous like 25 of 20 DP cruisers in theory you have a 500 DP fleet that will initially deploy at minimum DP against the biggest 700 DP fleet but increases in DP available as soon as you kill one of their ships, swinging the tide in your favour.

Yeah, late game my fleet composition is usually 10 support ships, 4-12 capital ships, escort cruisers, carriers, and destroyers.

But that's because I now have infinite money and can afford to do that, on a tighter budget without a home base, and depending on what you are going to be doing with it you can MASSIVELY change your load-out.

On exploration and salvaging jobs you basically only want enough combat ships to match domain probe drones, planning on avoiding pirate fleets and worse altogether. With supporting cargo ships with surveying mods to get the job done.

You current fleet seems to be a capital ship (conquest), 3 cruisers (Eagle, Venture, Apogee), 3 carriers (Fast Carrier, Condor, Mora), 2 phase ships (Harbinger, Afflictor), a frigate (Tempest), and whatever a Memnon is along with support ships.

Not a bad fleet with a lot of diversity. Pretty good for running around doing bounties and killing pirates. Hard to really comment as I'm not sure what you feel you need to be fighting right now or what you want to be doing. Getting another capital, and maybe some more carriers to support it might help you take on luddic battle-stations perhaps? As well as swapping out civilian or weaker ships like the Venture and Condor for proper military craft like a Dominator-class Heavy Cruiser and a Drover-class Light Carrier. (If you don't feel like doubling up on the same ships you already have.)

Another thing to consider might be to buff up your escort fleet of phase ships, frigates and destroyers. These ships work excellently on the flanks of a battle or in support of your larger ships. I can highly reccormend the Hammerhead-class Destroyer and the Sunder-class Destroyer as cheap and effective escorts that punch above their weight in support or against similarly sized/equipped opponents.

Sunders are the best ship in the game.

Since your current fleet is Burn 8 (you add militarized systems to Venture, right?) and already has a Conquest, I'd say dropping Burn to 7 just for single Onslaught is not worth it.
