Stuck on the Odyssey
« on: October 11, 2019, 09:51:39 PM »

So I've become convinced that the best ship to pilot is the Odyssey with 2x Plasma Cannon and 3x IR Pulse Laser on the left side. Round it out with a couple of medium Sabot launchers, MIRV launcher, and typhoon launcher, and it just seems to melt everything in its path. Plus it has a couple of fighter bays that can be equipped with sabot/typhoon bombers.

What can beat this?

For playership? I prefer flying a Conquest with 2 mjolnirs, 2 gauss and 2 locusts, or a quadruple tachyon lance Paragon, though that one's fairly different. For AI, I probably would still choose Conquest or other capitals, though mainly because of how rare Odyssey is in comparison.

Tri-Tachyon fleets with their mass of fighters and bomber and phase ships are particularily annoying to fight against with an odyssey, though that might be true of Tri-Tachyon fleets in general.

The Odyssey is notably best used as a pilot ship, but the best ship to pilot? It might depend on what skills you have. For instance if you have no combat/personally piloting skills, you might be better off piloting phases ships or even just sitting somewhere with a cheap ship with an Operations Centre hullmod depending on the rest of the fleet.

Astral! With 2x Longbow 4x Cobra or Khopesh, 2x Squall MLRS, Expanded Missile Racks, Unstable Injector; Max Fighter Skills, Evasive Maneuvers 1, Helmsmanship 1, Defensive Systems 2. Depending on what you fight you can kill a capital ship every minute.

The minus to replacements from Unstable Injectors isn't too bad then?

Ah right! Unless the fighters get completely nuked, which is really a thing that only player fleets do, as the AI doesn't build for anti-fighter at all.

Edit: for real though its weak to phase ships

Oh, definitely. I don't even bother. What I do is kill everything that isn't a phase ship with the Odyssey, then pursue the retreating fleet and kill the phase ships/tankers with one of my "Little Macs":
Hyperion-class frigate
- Safety Overrides + Advanced Optics, max vents
- 2x Phase Lance
- 2x Reaper Torpedos
This little bastard is the fastest thing on the map and one of them can sometimes pop 2 cruisers and 6 destroyers before the enemy fleet has a chance to retreat. Very expensive to deploy though.

Tri-Tachyon fleets with their mass of fighters and bomber and phase ships are particularily annoying to fight against with an odyssey, though that might be true of Tri-Tachyon fleets in general.

I've always prioritized PD over hull mods and so this seems to not be an issue for me. I run my Odyssey with accelerated shields, stabilized shields, max vents, no capacitors, and every small mount with a PD weapon. With this and spark interceptors replacing my reaper bombers, I've never been very threatened by fighters. I approach with right side facing forward and it shreds the small ships. Once they're gone, turn to the left side and start melting carriers and cruisers. Then plasma burn away, circle around, rinse and repeat.

So, seems here are some good other loadouts:

- Conquest with mjolnir/gauss/locust. I've not given serious attention to any of these 3 weapons in my player ship so far, so I'm looking forward to trying this.
- Astral with Longbow/Khopesh and MLRS.

Some Remnant fleets seem to have relatively large numbers of Sparks. Not that it matters since you generally choose whether to fight against remnants or not.

A beam Odyssey will eat phase ships. And does a good enough job of smacking other things around that I've been using one as a flag for a while now.
Plasma Odyssey hits harder, but I prefer the freedom the beam loadout gives you to shield tank and generally not really care about flux as much.

Odyssey doesn't have enough slots/flux dissipation to use soft flux pressure against anything significant. It can reasonably try to exploit hard flux from Longbows + missiles with it's TLs, but there is not much point in adding Tacs. In most cases Tacs will do exactly nothing to enemy (shields up with no soft flux and dissipation above Tacs damage output) while costing Odyssey a lot of flux thus reducing it's ability to fire TLs.

We each have our preferences.
Beams work well enough on a wide enough selection of things for me to consider them a preference.
And the lower flux profile is very noticable, especially compared to a plasma build. (The lower micromanagment requirement also helps.)
Not encountered the problems described.

For ref: I only play campaign with full fleet support etc. So if you're doing some min-max simulator thing, then I'll let you crack on with that in peace.

I spammed all tacticals on one broadside, tach lances in the large energies, Hurricane MIRV and sabots in the missiles, and burst pd on the front and rear smalls.
