Imposing tariffs on other factions
« on: October 11, 2019, 06:46:56 AM »

I think it would be cool if for any given faction whether it be independent, pirate or hegemony; that you could set tariffs on specific commodities to either boost or degrade relations and revenue. Not sure how this would affect another factions propensity to buy goods, that might make things a little more complicated, but that's what makes this game fun! :D

Even if you impose tariffs, we can assume the black market is also available to NPC traders. They would be able to avoid them.

How would it play out in terms of game mechanics? It might be something like "each item traded gives more cr", but the penalty would probably be a cost of "reduced accessibility". Traders will put less effort into non profitable trades, after all. So if you are getting more profit per trade, but there are less trades overall, is that a good thing or a bad thing?

This was thought of but discounted as managing relations was not intended to be so easy as to set a standing and wait until relations went the way you wanted.

If its just an accessibility/profit  thing then its becomes an optimization game which is not ideal because the main gameplay cycle is not supposed to be managing your colony(rather the colony is supposed to be a progression system to provide impetus and support for core gameplay)

I suppose ot could work if it was almost strictly negative. Such that you reduced accessability and relations (as if you were hostile) and in exchange did not see free port/production based expeditions. (And maybe took a flat penalty per activation)
