Best Artwork of Starfarer

My vote? The Paragon. David - you have really refined your method, the Paragon is really the best ship you've made so far. I've just been inspecting some of the detail you put into this close-up, and it's really quite stunning. Good job mate!

While I strongly feel that the Astral artwork is a very close second place, here's another vote for the Paragon taking first place. That battleship looks so stunningly real. It's also greebled to perfection.

My current favorite is the hammerhead. Just something about it.

All the art is really stellar. He's definitely refining his techniques, but I mean the wolf is still on my top 5 and that was in the first run.

Yeah, I really love all the artwork, it's really phenomenal! My personal favorites are the Onslaught, Astral, and strangely... the Atlas.

Nothing strange about that. It's the most believable-looking "space container-freighter" I've ever found.  ;D

All of the civilian ships look pretty good, but my vote goes to the Onslaught. I just love all those pipes.

I would have to say that the Dominator has always captured my adoration. I don't think any other ship looks so profoundly nasty as a Dominator firing on all cylinders, machine guns shredding hordes of Wasps.

The Atlas and Paragon are the most believable, I think.

But I really like the Hyperion.  It captures that old-school "Space Fighter" look, with the V-shaped wings, the symetrical design, and the bubble shield.

Does this include modwork?

What do ya'll think of my ships:

Oh, and if it wasn't clear enough, I love the work on Hegemony ships, since I prefer the battered, worn-and-thorn look of their ships.

Well I don't know if this is the thread for it, but your stuff is cool, too. It fits nicely with the vanillla ships, but also stands out. It's noisy in a happy way. I do prefer the vanilla art, though.

Conquest.

I hate how most high-tech ships look. A big part of that is probably my personality, even way back when, I thought the curves of the Protoss in Starcraft looked pretentious and stupid.

Onslaught just looks pleasing to the eye in my opinion.  The greys and browns match perfectly.  ;D I love the Wolf as well, it's sleek body and color are great.

All the capital ships are gorgeous, no doubt about it.

My current favorite is the hammerhead. Just something about it.

Agreed! It's got a ton of character—I love the armadillo-ish armor plates around the stern. Really, all of the ships have a remarkable three-dimensionality to them. You can totally see the curve of the armor, the recesses of hangar bays (I love all the carriers), the towering bridges.

Conquest would be my second pick, it definitely stands out and has a lot of personality.

:D

By the way, the Hammerhead is totally an homage to Starcraft's Battlecruiser.

And curved stuff is a big pain when doing pixel art. By the time I got around to the Paragon I started playing more with applying PS's vector tool to draw curved hull pieces and all those little panels and seams on them. It worked pretty well.

I still want to push myself toward more holistic ship designs starting with unique silhouettes as I find myself over-relying on pixel greebling, even if it is something I think I can pull off pretty well. An influence in the design ideals I'm pushing for, if less in technique, is the brilliant work of Arne Niklas Jansson ( http://androidarts.com/ ) who did the art for Cortex Command, for instance. Aside from that, Master of Orion games were huge in my childhood, so there ya go.

Ahem. But carry on. *leans back and enjoys the thread*
