Atlas...with an awesome twist (watch video!)
« on: March 14, 2012, 08:25:01 PM »

You might even say it's...more than meets the eye ;)  http://youtu.be/Dny0x-LYys4?hd=1

Just a proof of concept for now, still trying to figure out what should go inside.  Guns?  Missiles?  Any ideas?

That's really cool.  :D

Pity it won't show up like a normal atlas on the strategic map/fleet composition views.

That's awesome :p. Too bad you can't restrict that weapon to the Atlas alone.

Hahaha thats badass! maybe an ECM module that allows you to choose what ship you want to appear as on the campaign map? It would be hilarious to hide your entire fleet as freighters.

Glad you guys dig it :D  I'm curious to see if the breakaway panels render on top of any turrets placed beneath them, or vice versa.  Haven't tested that yet.  Be cool to have a secret battleship/missile cruiser, if only for fun.

Very cool. I look forward to the possibilities. This game is already too awesome for it's own good.

Turrets and missiles (especially missiles) tend to overlap each other. So yes, there is a possibility to create hidden weapons. The problems are that you`ll have to blow the panels before you fire the weapons beneath it.

Making those panels no-aim and anti-fighter (hints) with extremely long range and kinetic damage will force AI to fire them long before the other weapons will get into range.

It's not super practical, even if it looks cool.  My original concept was for the cargo bays to retract like a garage door or a bread box, but I couldn't figure out a good way to animate it.  There's probably something I could kludge by treating the false panels as gun barrels that recoil slowly and don't reset to their original positions, but that would take some doing.  And thanks, Alex!

At least back in .33a and .34a this method should work. I haven't messed around with twice-used projectiles since, but I believe it never got changed.

First, create a dummy weapon, with a projectile type that has an alpha of 0 (transparent) and fades immediately and does no damage. Set it to have a range of 0.
Then, create the retracting cargo weapon:
Give them 1 ammo, and set them to have effectively infinite range (in the csv!), again set no damage. Then, in the .weapon file, set them to use the same .projectile type as the dummy weapon. This way, the 0-range of the first takes precedence over the duration of the projectile's lifetime.
