It also, and I don't know if this is intentional somewhat resembles an onslaught class ship.  Unless it's just me.

I don't know... I personally would like to imagine the Hegemony as an authoritarian tyranny of an oligarchy or something like that, and the peaceful blue color just doesn't jive.

Other than that, it's a great job :)

Apologies to Relic

What it all means:

Planet and moon - Terra and Luna, the homeworld of mankind and the seat of power for the Domain of Man. A reminder of the shared origin of mankind regardless of diaspora or belief.
Five stars - the five original core worlds of the Hegemony, with the biggest star representing Hasteus Prime, capital of the Hegemony
Wings - mankind's reach towards the stars, also Strike Force Pollux, the original military arm of the Hegemony. The wings flanking both Earth and the core worlds represent the protection offered by Hegemony to its citizens from the unbearable horrors that lurk amongst the stars.
Why do you have to beat me to the punch? ;)
It does look good, but a blue is too....weak.  The Hegemony have somewhat of an iron grip on the Corvus system, having a pretty large, erm, navy? in the system.  A rusty red or brown might make it a bit better.

maybe someone with good photoshop skills can put the logo on a shield like this?
that would make it look perfect

They don't actually sound quite that bad. Oh sure, they're no bunch of hippies, but in general it sounds to me like they're basically "military junta, but a moderately decent one." You may be right, though - maybe a darker blue or something? I still think that anything too blatantly hostile would ring trite.

Yeah, I think a dark red is definitely too cliche but a brown or grey or dark blue I can see working. The light blue, though... just no.

It's easy to flip the picture but I thought about it while making it and decided on wings down. It's Hegemony's way of saying "We are the only legitimate government of the sector because we inherited the legacy of the Domain of Man. Our mandate for rule comes directly down from Old Earth itself".

Wings up would look too full of hope and it places the sector above Old Earth, which then doesn't give the same "came down from Domain to restore order to the sector" feel.

It sounds like they have some pretty douchey policies regarding containment and 'cleansing' of cultists, though. Like, decimating systems they think susceptible to 'infestation' and such ('The Last Hurrah' is the mission I'm thinking of). So an undertone of brutality could be neat (however that would be translated graphically... I'm no artist).

The thing to remember is that authoritarian governments have this thing with dressing themselves up as champion and protector of the people. Hence you have ironic names like Democratic People's Republic of Korea and National Socialist German Workers' Party. This filters down to the symbols they choose for themselves and you won't see any overt symbols of oppression on their banners.

On a slightly different note, by popular demand, the same Hegemony symbol, now in GRIMDARK colours

I think a clenched fist represents rebellion. The Hegemony seems like it's the authority, so IMO a clenched fist would not represent them very well.

I strongly agree with this. I get the impression that they rule with an iron fist and are not willing to make compromises. A dictatorship with the mindset that if they were to fall from the throne the sector would result in chaos.

Why are the wings upside down? Is that part of the symbolism?

according to the homeworld lore and some of my knowledge. in the homeworld series the wings stand for embracing the planet that you love and you will not stop for anything in your way. this is the case in the homeworld series. ;D
