I do like the idea of pre/post battle engagements for your ships that aren't suited for the main battle.

Managing supply during battle doesn't sound that interesting to me. I imagine removing the hard cap on fleet size will make fleets with more small ships a bit more viable than they are now.

My late game fleet (no mods, normal difficulty) compositions is this (it has so far been able to handle every single-stack capital-spam fleet I have come across).
Capitals: 2 Onslaughts, 2 XIV Legions
Cruisers: 3 Auroras, 3 Apogees, 1 Heron, 1 Eagle
Destroyers: 2 Hammerheads, 1 Sunder
Frigates: 4 Centurion, 1 Omen, 2 Wolfs
The rest are various non-combat ships.

I find most of the ships useful. Personally I mostly use Aurora (I leave the capitals to AI). In typical fleet battles with some capitals I often start by deploying capitals and some Centurions that I send to hold map points and distract the enemy fleet. I use destroyers and Centurions/Omen to escort the capitals. Not counting my Aurora, I mostly deploy cruisers when I really don't need capitals or all capitals are already in (or some have left) the battle. The two wolves are safety overrided and used purely in pursuit battles.

The number of frigates and destroyers in my fleet has dropped because their survivability becomes really low with more and more capitals in battles. Centurion is the main exception with its Damper Field which lets it survive even capital battles. Other frigates are far less useful and I phased out all Lashers that were really nice early on (they just die way too much in larger battles). Destroyers are probably the least versatile class of ships by now and are almost purely rear guards for capitals when Centurions aren't enough or there isn't enough Centurions.

Oddly enough Cruisers are the least used ships in my fleet (not counting the Auroras which I often rotate as my personal ship). I only have 6 officers and cruisers cost a bit too much to deploy when compared to capitals with destroyers and frigates which gives better bang for the deployment points. In earlier game I used a lot of Falcons but they really don't work in capital battles, mainly getting in the way with their jack-of-all-trades nature turned into a weakness rather than the strength it used to be.

I don't really feel any pressure to make my fleet heavier although I imagine that could become an issue later purely because of the fleet size calculation putting me at disadvantage vs capital spam. I don't find any ship size to be completely obsolete or useless but several individual ship classes have become pretty useless to me.
