Status List + Withdrawal standing order
« on: March 12, 2012, 11:53:14 PM »

Gday,

I want to address today a specific problem I start to have with large fleet engagements towards the end of the game. That is: I start to lose track of my smaller vessels on the map screen. I know this is mostly due to destructions and whatnot but its sometimes also cause by bunching of icons in the map view and repair work being done on the fighter wings.

My suggestion to help reduce this confusion that can arrise is this. Have a pop out status list, indicating all the ships on the field, thier status (deployed/undeployed/hidden/disabled/destroyed) and for friendlies some basic information on Hull strength and possibly ordinence (though that may be to much). Making it a togalable popout button would prevent it from getting in the road of the map and would allow us to access it during those moments of confusion. I think this is a sensible extension of the current ways to moniter the fleet if implemented without giving away to much about the enemy.

Plus one other suggestion while I am here. Dealing with the issue of frigate getting heavily damage and not catching it in time in a large engagement, so the AI puts it back into a fight and it blows up. I would like to suggest a standing order or assignable order that forces a frigate or possibly (depending on how you think it will affect gameplay) destroyer class vessels to withdraw when they reach 20 or 10 percent health left. This will even out some of the losses the player can have against the ever aware AI. I would expect this to cost orders. Discussion over weather this would auto take out order each time a vessel withdraws would be needed. Additionally this would have to be activated on a per engagement basis to prevent the frustration of a frigate running when you dont want it to.

Not sure I agree on the first part, having to learn to keep track of a much larger fleet is part of the challenge. depending on how big your fleet is of course.. It would be nice to have, but it needs to be implemented in a seamless fashion and has to be intuitive to open and easy to read, which could be a problem for really big fleets..

There would simply be too many ships to keep it easy and intuitive.

The second part I agree on, I would love to be able to tell my fighters and frigates to retreat at a certain point and not have to babysit them.

For fighters I'd like 2 options, one to return to rearm and refit, 50% wing size, and one to retreat off the map, 25% wing size? obviously this would need to be tweaked for squadrons with only 2 or 3 fighters.

well to me i see this as a side scroll bar as you can see on many RTS game ( think like errrr.... sins of a solar empire ) on the side you would see the status of your ship, their current action ( like capturing, attacking a ship, being crippled, escorting etc ) and to me would flash red when they start to be in difficulty ( as HP low, high amount of enemy around the ship ) and would flash blue in Flux overload ( and purple for both... >_> )
