Currently all my smuggling ships have 225 speed, but I've been thinking. What if I just don't deploy the slow ones? Can I always run from combat using the 255 speed ship even though my fleet have 30 speed ships?

I am not talking about burn levels, When a fleet touches me, I just select "Disengage", I lose some CR and escape, always, automatically.

But what happens if not all of my ships have 255 speed?

If an enemy fleet tries to pursue you, ALL of your ships are deployed in combat, even civilian ones. So it's not that easy to always escape but just put Unstable injector hullmod on every freighter and tanker since weapon ranges don't really mean anything for them.

So I do have to be fast no matter what...

I guess safety removal and unstable on all drams at all times

Civilian-grade hulls cannot use Safety Override without Military Subsystems.

Burn speed may not matter in the current release.  (It used to.)  If the enemy wants to pursue, you will be forced to deploy all.

Note that after your fleet gets big enough, it will be impossible to flee without a fight.

I'm from the Sseth wave. Why doesn't burn speed matter? Seems pretty important to me.

It used to be that if a fleet's slowest burn ship was faster than a chasing fleet's highest burn ship then the evading fleet could cleanly disengage no matter what. Burn speed might still be important on the player's side of things though, since the patch notes specifically mentions that the player is always able to force pursuit.
