To use the gauss cannon, one must hold down the LMB until it is fully charged, then release it to fire ("autocharge":false, "requiresFullCharge":true).

The problem is it still produces flux even when the cannon is fully charged, which means that if you don't release the LMB, at 500 flux/second the flux meter will quickly max out.

That's technically a feature (it continues to build flux at half the rate once fully-charged).

We're gradually converting pulse weapons to a different control scheme, though. So in some not-too-distant build, the Gauss cannon will require a single click to use - it'll charge by itself, for a second or two, and then fire.

Ah. I kind of like being able to release the shot at a moment of my choosing, but I think the new control scheme will be for the best—at the moment, I have to divide my attention between the target, the charge-up indicator bar, and my flux level.
