Is Midline just between high tech and low-tech?
« on: July 02, 2019, 07:44:09 PM »

So I basically understand what low-tech and high-tech's strengths are (ballistics and armor vs energy and shields, generally) though I don't know where it's spelled out, but I'm curious if midline tech ships are literally just between the two extremes, or if they have their own shtick apart from that.

Midline's defining features imo:

1) The mix of energy and ballistics, which allows for some unique and powerful weapon combinations.

2) Fast powerful carriers. (And some bits of lore talk about the advent of strike craft.)

3) Highly specialized support ships. Monitor, Vigilance, Sunder, and Gryphon all are specialized (defense, missile sniping, energy glass cannon, missile glass cannon). The fast carriers also kind of fall in this carrier.

Also with Eagles and Falcons / Conquest - very balanced ships, between hull strenght/armor strenght/firepower/speed/shields. Jack of all trades.

Midline ships have the flexibility and, due to all the mobility, have the easiest time rotating their ships in and out of an engagement. They can also mix both ballistics and energy guns to get benefits from both at the same time (like an Eagle with long-range kinetics and an ion beam — nasty). This technically isn't their gimmick, but you could say that being in between two extremes is an advantage in itself.

Midline ships tend to be quite directional with lots of forward hardpoints or broadsides.

Firepower. There's other aspects like flexibility, mobility, some vulnerability to flanking, etc - but the defining feature is they wreck face at whatever range they want.
