Stabilize Floating cargo containers, should last longer?

I find myself not using this feature, because it is somewhat expensive and doesn’t last very long. Stuffs you fasten together and set adrift in orbit wouldn’t drift apart until something collides with it, so what’s the reason for having a time limit on it in game? Also why so short, a mere months before secured cargo  disappears?

Dirty secret: I think it's bugged and the stabilized pods actually last forever.
I never reported this because I think it works better this way; I like being able to come back and pick stuff up even after years have passed.

I guess it's time limited so it's not clearly better than using market storage. Although this could be accomplished in other ways, like having fleets that pass near the pods take them for themselves.

I'm p. sure this is already a thing that happens.
Definitely seen pirates picking up crates, not sure if anyone else does though.

you can even drop cargo to make pirates stop chasing you. But how this bug went so long undiscovered just says how rarely people actually use it.

Dropping crates to get pirates to stop chasing you is a feature. I remember a tweet by alex highlighting it when it was in development.
