Boarding?
« on: June 01, 2019, 11:06:05 AM »

Why boarding has never been done? It seems it would be rather 'fun' to send your marine in little assault shuttles once the shields are down. And imagine all the extra mods you can think about, 'Security Station', 'High Speed Boarding Shuttles', 'Secondary Bridge', 'Extra Marine Company', etc. !

Boarding was done before 0.8a.  Before 0.6a, it was too easy to get free ships and money.  From 0.6a to 0.7.2a, it was a frustrating slot machine that got one or two forum users banned after posting very angry posts to say the least.  0.8a discarded boarding in favor of recovering ships.

If you mean something like a (platform) mini-game to board ships, it would require Alex to effectively make another game, and require different gaming skills that some could cheese flawlessly while others would struggle.  Plus, if the mini-game could be solved, it just adds tedium to the game if the player does not care and wants to auto-resolve or get on with the game now.

Alex has said that he didn't find a way to make boarding work nicely, feel good to use and add anything to the game. And maybe something like "it would be just another healthbar and another weapon type to track"? I vaguely recall something like that, but I'm not sure.

Everything can be described in such way that it feels terribly dumb, unwelcome and without any interest.

After all, what is fuel? It's like supply except you use it when you move. Why not merge both supply and fuel into a single resource? Who care?

Really...

Back to Boarding. It would require to have shield down. You would need either to couple your ship to the boarded one, or manage to send shuttles (like missiles). Then you have a tons of Ship mods that would alter odds and provide a different flavor to the game and some ships. Indeed, a health bar if you will. Except that the actual crew and marines you have on board would fight and die.
The boarder can manage to take over some parts of the ship, like disabling the engine, etc.

You can see that as a very different form of weaponry.

Yes, EMP weaponry.
I didn't mean to make boarding sound boring, it's just that it's been talked over and over... Many times and long ago enough that even Frequently Made Suggestions thread responds to it.

Ok, if it has been debated to death, and Alex has made his mind, then lets the subject rests in peace, whatever I think.
