i use imaginary rules for two things , Colony management and repair, because this way the game is more interesting for me.
Colony management i use points system for Industry and defense buildings , each point allows to build one new building or upgrade existing.
so in total there are
9 building and upgrades for defense ( including the red planet shield )
10 building and upgrades for industries

Size 3 start with
3 Industry ( one is reserved for farming only, if there is no possibility to farm here is only two point available)
3 Defense
So left 13 points to allocate
Size 4 +2
Size 5 +2
size 6 +2
Size 7 +2
Size 8 +2
Size 9 +2
Size 10 +1
Repair system
the use case is when my fleet i able to fully repair and refit wile a enemy fleet is attacking the star base , and there is possibility to repeat this whit the next attack and the next..
so use he rule in those cases to repair my ships in space only , or use reserves stored in the colony if there are any
in addition to that
I think it would be good feature to have, of repair and refit cost time, and in some cases money, when this is done in neutral space ports ( similar to the game battle-tech )
May be having alpha core in the space port on heavy industry can make repair refit almost instant
