Fighers and bombers...How do order them to attack?

I don't know if it's a quirk of the last update, but my fighters and bombers just hang around my carrier, and even if I order an attack on another ship, they just chill out around my carrier, and never move to attack unless I move physically close to an enemy target.

How do I get them to leave home and go do something with their miserable lives?

The 'Z' key swaps fighters/bombers from regroup (slows Reinforcement Rate loss) to engage (attacks/escorts targeted vessel).

Keep in mind though, fighters will only engage/escort a targeted ship that's within their "engagement range" stat.

Also, 'engaging' creates a bit of flux upkeep, just in case you thought you could run with the 0% fluxboost.

This question seems to pop up all the time. Perhaps Engage/Regroup should have the hotkey for it displayed next to it just to remind new players since there is not icon to turn it on or off anyways and can only be activated by the hotkey. Perhaps the hotkey for holdfire as well.

The UI is convoluted enough as it is. I would rather see less tiny text than more of it.

This is the kind of thing that new players only need to be introduced to once. Not something that should take up permanent residence on the combat UI.

The combat tutorials are still very much the meat and butter (bread? eh), of the 'just starting Starsector'. Last i check it wasn't in there afair.

There's plenty of space in the minimalistic UI for a single letter next to the appropriate area. Enough space for plenty of letters. The UI isn't convulated at all. It's pretty standard RTS control scheme to have buttons with the hotkey displayed to change or activate an ability. There's no button, so instead the hotkey can should be displayed next to the information for the ability.
