A ship somehow disappeared from a battle
« on: January 25, 2019, 06:43:50 PM »

I managed to capture an Astral with just a couple of D-mods (damaged flight deck and something like flux or armor issues), so I figured I could take on some harder bounties.

I would pilot the Astral myself for a while (loaded with Daggers for the Atropos missiles), and have a Heron with Claws for support (as well as a second Heron for possible backup). A tanky Venture outfitted with swarmers and flak/machine guns for PD would be my escort. That makes 80 points for the initial deployment. I also had two similarly outfitted Enforcers and a Hammerhead in case I could deploy reinforcements.

The target bounty has a full line of Herons and a couple of Eagle/Falcons. I Transverse Jump right next to him and engage. Turns out he actually has like 10 Herons, 4-5 Condors, a Drover, an Eagle, a Sunder, two Falcons and some trash. Ok, no biggie, we can do it. Just stick to the plan.

I order the Venture and Heron to escort me, and proceed to capture a Nav point. There's a Shrike already capturing it. I show it what 6 wings of Daggers can do and... check my reinforcements screen...

Where the hell did the Venture go? It's nowhere to be found. There's no enemies anywhere near that could have killed it. It's just gone...

I deploy the Enforcers, and proceed to decimate the enemy fleet. There are only 3-4 Condors and a Sunder left when the Enforcers finally go down. I only had a little bit of hull at that point, and my backup Heron was way too far by the time I could deploy it.

I really don't understand what happened. If that Venture didn't randomly disappear, I would have won.

what on end engagement screen?

on nonmodded game ship can't just "gone" as it stored as part of "combat" object that created to host combat data.

You were up against a lot of carriers. It sounds like a fighter wave zeroed in on that venture. I've seen that happen, never seen a ship up and vanish.

I highly doubt it. The Venture was right next to me, and they had mostly piranhas in the first wave of carriers. I literally checked the reinforcements screen after I killed that Shrike. It was gone way too soon to be killed , and it was literally outfitted full PD with a lot of shields and hull. It really was a flying tank.

They can't deploy too many carriers, as well. A Heron is 20 points, they had like 3-4 carriers at a time, and the first fights included Falcons and a lot of Vigilances. Furthermore, the two Enforcers lasted as long as I had predicted, despite the odds turning against me like that.

If you quit right after, do you still have the save file from right before? And if so, can you reproduce the bug?

If it is a bug it sounds serious but extremely rare - reproducing it would be a big help and would let Alex track it down.

I didn't keep the save. I wasn't sure if it was a bug, for all I know it somehow retreated from the battle or something.

(The wreck might despawn if you weren't near it/looking at it for a while (for performance reasons), so that's not necessarily an indicator of anything going wrong.)

TIL. Though I love wrecks in game, they act like terrain where the player can abuse the AI.

A while back i had a venture disappear before our two blobs met in the middle. I chocked it up to my poor attention missing it blow up. It was recoverable after the fight. (I was playing a salvage character so i had a ton of zombie ships)

Ventures are slow and have a ton of life so i'm not really sure what could have killed it. I was in the fastest cruiser and only my frigates had radar on the enemy. There weren't even meteors in that fight.
