Does anyone find Commerce worth it?
« on: January 08, 2019, 09:16:46 AM »

With such a limited number of building slots in your colony, do you find Commerce to be at all worth it? It grants you +1 Stability and the opportunity to buy from your own station with 30% tariffs.

That same slot could be used for another industry or one of the military buildings, both of which provide more economic gain or Stability, depending on which one you want. And I don't see the need to buy things from my own faction, seeing as I can just produce them.

What am I missing here?

I have considered Commerce much like Tech Mining, an early industry to raise stability until you no longer need it.

I have it mostly for the ability to sell stuff if I'm too far away from core systems.  Also has the side benefit of adding more of that resource to the colony's monthly needs.

Does the stuff sold make up for upkeep?

Adding more stock is handy for small colonies or those with insufficient resources, but primary colonies that have all of the resources probably do not need it.

Next release will have limited industry slots.  If Commerce does not count as Industry, it could be more useful.  If it counts as industry, I probably will shove it aside for something that can produce what my colonies need.

You can make a chunk of change selling your stuff, more than enough to cover the upkeep if you're exploring a lot (generally selling Metals and the such).

1) you can sell to yourself and save yourself stops in the core worlds

2) you can buy things that you can produce which can save you the time it takes to produce them

3) you can sell yourself nanoforges and they will be installed in your colony for you.

Keep in mind commerce is currently bugged and refreshes every time you exit, you can buy thousands of anything you produce in a matter of seconds.

I remember reading that some time ago (and forgot about it).  That looks like classic exploit that should be fixed eventually.

I swear Alex said it's fixed in dev, but I don't have a link.

if commerce will consume industry slot, well, just waste of slot for any colony expect temp waystation, in case of waystation you build starport, that do not consume slot, waystation and commerce, do not grow over 3 ever, do not build anything else.

if commerce do not consume industry slot, well, you always build it and replace on size of 8 with something more useful.

I had the chance to try Commerce exploits posted above in a new game, and the exploits are a game breaker.  I could sell my one synchrotron as many times as I want for infinite money.  I do not need colony skills for money when I can exploit that money loop.  With infinite money, I can restore everything, and all it costs is a minute or two to sell my synchrotron a few times.  With market refresh combined with infinite money, I have effectively infinite crew, supplies, fuel, and anything else my colony produces (like marines and rare metals if I have the industries), plus ships.

Commerce with its bugs is the most powerful industry in the game, if the player has a synchrotron or pristine nanoforge to jump start the infinite money loop.  (Corrupted nanoforge could do, but is worth much less and takes much longer to build up money.)

Yeah that's why I only sell stuff there, I never buy because I'm not sure whether it should have already refreshed or not. I also don't use the nanoforge exploit.

I cannot resist not using the Commerce exploit.  I do not care if it is clearly bugged, not using it to break the game when I can seems... stupid.

At this point, I played 0.9a to the ground, and I will probably wait until next release before I play another full game again.

Commerce is worth it just for the ability to pull supplies from the market AND the stockpile, almost doubling what you can access in one visit.

The tarrif is so ignorable I didn't even realise there was one until it was pointed out.
Using a building slot for commerce is only a problem if you try to build a colony that does everything. This is less of an issue once you start moving toward specialised colonies that support each other.

Question:
Interaction with a market is one of the most basic mechanisms in this game, so why is that gated behind something just because a place is owned by the player?
