cautious AI in carriers
« on: January 02, 2019, 10:05:24 PM »

so i hired a cautious AI to fly my carrier in the hopes he'll stay behind the front lines, but i keep finding him up front dishing it out like any other steady officer. am i doing something wrong? i put him escorting my capital ship, or make him move to a waypoint behind the front lines. but it seems that once in direct combat the AI virtually refuses to disengage, even upon receiving new orders, unless i issue the retreat command.

Carriers are just way too keen to float up towards the front lines no matter what kind of officer they have and it's incredibly frustrating. The enemy does it as well which tends to be bizarre.

If it's a combat carrier, the only way to keep it far from the fight is with a timid officer, and no escort orders.

Cautious simply means that the ship prefers engaging with its longest range weapon available, but it doesn't mean it won't fight.

Herons are considered combat carriers for example, but they're very fragile.

If you want a tough carrier and not worry about them taking damage, get some Moras.

Not sure if it's what you're seeing, but there's a bug in carrier escorting behavior that you might want to note and work around.

Carriers at the moment are extremely bugged and will fly thousands of units away from a rally command to facehug superior enemies. I recommend using only Moras, Legions, and Astrals in this patch - the others will fruitlessly suicide.

Ensure that they have at least one long range, non-missile weapon when using the Cautious personality

That helps but isn't very reliable--I went so far as to put ITU on my tac-laser-armed cautious carriers in the tournament and they still tend to facehug enemies.

Currently, there's an issue where carriers will attempt to facehug enemies regardless of what weapons you equip them with and what officers they have save for maybe timid. According to Alex, it has to do with too many carriers and not enough combat ships to hide behind which is unfortunate, since I would like to use a fleet based almost entirely on carriers and combat carriers. Yet, when I had something like that wouldn't you know it that the first ships to get in the face of the luddic path battlestation were my drovers of all things. Personally, I think it might be something else really, I mean I don't expect my carriers to sit pretty at 3000-4000 range from a battlestation but literally being the first to go in followed by my herons is just silly.

Carrier AI seems odd in general since they apparently can engage at a distance of 4000 (or 8000) but yet don't try to do so. But of course if they could do so, the potential of carriers would be so great it would lead to even greater tipping point problem.

Currently, I just deploy carriers last and eyeball where the battleline established then create a rally point just for carriers to sit behind. They still wander out in the front sometimes. Or you could go with using Mora and ignore this problem atm.
