It'd been a very long time since i'd flown an apogee before .9  and i'd forgotten how cool it feels to fly an everything ship. It's also nice that the everything is relevant now too (last time i flew one fuel was useless because hyperspace didn't exist yet)

My favorite ship type kinda depends on  my mood. Usually i like to fly the toughest ships that make you notice them. EG. dominator and tartarus from SHI. Sometimes i feel more fancy free and choose ships that have long range and are fast like falcons. Death of 1000 cuts type of fights. Hardened subsystems are mandatory then of course.

My favorite size to fly is cruiser. I lack the twitch skill necessary to do well with fast little ships past the early game. Also while the power capital ships brings to bear is great its not as fun for me.

A slab of armor with guns and rocket engines attached to the back. Silly pew pew zoom zoom lasers and excessive amounts of flashy shields are for chumps. Heavy armor, ballistic cannons and explosive shells on a hulk that refuses to die in the face of overwhelming odds is the true way to go.

Afflictor - powerful, but not in a boring way like Harbinger.
Rushing through enemy fleet and deleting enemy carriers right as they finish entry burn is fun.

Wayfarer

It requires careful forethought in the fitout and quite a bit of skill to pilot well in combat.  Off-centerline triple converging turrets, capability to engage multiple targets and that spin for dumbfire torpedoes.  Challenging but pure joy when it all comes together

Medium energy, medium ballistic, small energy mounts, and, Idc what else.
HVD, Ion beam, tac lasers (:

Alternatively, and Imperium had this; a destroyer or cruiser that has five or more small missiles on the front, a missile autoforge and a command or sensor suite. Atropos, missile racks, rename it "The Tyrant" and now I have infinite flagship forever. Bad boy can crack a Onslaught in half with a sly barrage, and any amount of balancing around that is fine by me bc I like piloting close support ships anyhow

I'm a big fan of the legion.

A big armoured carrier with impressive missile and ballistic load outs (on the front anyway) and four bays for strike craft.

You are essentially a flying fortress that can easily engage targets near and far with extreme prejudice.

I'm still a big fan of the Sunder and its ability to hunt down and one-shot most frigates. For campaign gameplay, I've spent a lot of time cruising in an Apogee with extended tanks and efficiency overhaul.

Care to share your loadout(s)? I struggle with the wayfarer every time I pick a scavenger start. It just feels so awkward...

The game was completed 8 years ago and we get a free expansion every year.

Arranging holidays in an embrace with the Starsector is priceless.

Same. My hat is off to anyone who can make that work.

Frigates, it's either Tempest when I want to field overwhelming firepower or Brawler for very cheeky SO. Destroyers, it's Hammerhead for firepower again, or Medusa for mobility. Cruiser sweet spot is occupied unchallenged by the mighty Aurora, it combines decent defences and mounts with excellent mobility. I can fight anything in the game with it and it won't go wrong. As for capitals, it's either Conquest for the raw power (see the pattern yet?) or Paragon for quad tachyon lances. I never liked Paragon until recently and I don't know what is it about it, but it makes sniping and brawling with it pretty enjoyable.

I always liked the way you put one on the field and everything else just died. That's what I look for in a cap :)  It does kind of ruin the illusion of fleet vs fleet combat though, unless you're monkeying with battle size.

Conquest - because fast ship is essential for saving friendly AIs and drawing enemy fire.

Early in 0.8 and before My favorite ship was always the Maelstrom from Diable Avionics. It's a very versatile ship that can handle just about any non-station involved situation independently. Flicker core gives it the ability to engage and disengage with any capital/cruiser on its own terms, it packs a decent amount of firepower, and it came with hanger bays which is good with the old 0.7 fighters where you needed few hanger bays above fighter critical mass with the MMA that could cover for the fighters and would last through even longer fights with old 0.7 skills and Expanded missile racks. In 0.8 it was able to handle any single enemy type barring a station. You had two fighter wings that were fast and lethal enough to kill flanking frigates and destroyers and could catch and fight cruisers and capitals with its own guns. Also, the maelstrom's long profile meant that you would be able to side strafe many attacks safely with your shield down. Flicker core was an immensely powerful ability that could be used to dodge attacks due to the maelstrom's unique profile and also be used to bait smaller ships well into attack range by using its ability to control facing out of flicker. It, like many Diable ships, used hybrid ballistic/energy slots giving it a lot of versatility in loadout. Plus with advanced avionics hullmod you can skip out on helmsmanship 1 for the acceleration as by the time you get AA 50% in-battle your acceleration needs will be well in hand.

Later on in 0.8 I swapped over to the Matriarch from Intersteller Imperium with Diable Wanzers for funz. 7 wanzer wings weren't something to sneeze at and could "deep strike" the enemies formation to take down escorts or key targets. The wanzers weren't as good at taking out capitals in formation, but could rapidly wipe out escorts and anything smaller than cruisers nigh instantly leaving the bigger targets to be swamped by the fleet. It could wipe out fleets much faster than the maelstrom could if they had no or minimal anti-fighter capabilities and wipe out non-ion based enemy interceptor clouds with ease, but fleets with many ion weapons or officers with Advanced countermeasures 3 made life difficult and both together meant that the carrier would be dead weight in that engagement whereas the Maelstrom really didn't have any enemy makeup that it couldn't handle.

Frost wings were my goto originally for destroying frigates and destroyers at a cheap OP cost, but recently their weapons were changed to fragmentation damage so I might have to change what I use for that when I start running mods in 0.9 when I have time.

PS. the flux stats for Maelstrom are similar to the Pandemonium despite the Pandemonium having many more weapons. If you love alpha damage, the Pandemonium is hard to ignore for effectivity, otherwise the Maelstrom is better for consistency overall.

I really like DME Kormoran - Fast, versatile, great alpha strike potential and also can be built for amazing broadside. Its pretty vulnerable too if you don't fly it properly - makes flying it more exciting!

Other ships that I like to fly are: BRDY Nevemore, Dominator with proper torpedo loadout, SCY Corocotta and classic Hammerhead.

This. So very much this.
I am so spectacularly bad at 'finesse' flying. It's not until Cruisers become available that I can start playing 'properly'.

My perfect ship is almost just a plain Dominator. If it had medium guns to cover it's behind instead of smalls, that would be more-or-less ideal.
Spoiler

This is what I spend the majority of my time flying once I've found all the bits.
Once you unlock loadout design, the flaks can be upgraded to dual, and the autocannons to railguns.
But even if all you can find is giant autocannons and hellbores for the large mounts, it still does an okay job.

So far I have found no other ship that I am comfortable enough with that I can just hulk apart giant fleets or stations.
