Other media that feels like Starsector
« on: November 26, 2018, 12:58:08 PM »

I recently watched Blame! on netflix. It felt like the broken and half working universe in Starsector. It's basically a western if you'd like to watch it. Pretty good.
It got me thinking though: what other media has the other forum-goers found that feels like Starsector. I'm happily spending all my free time playing the newest update, but i know  i'll eventually need to slow down and do some other passtime activity. I'm particularly interested in movies and books, but if you know of other media that has a similar feel, then please mention it too. Im sure others here will like it too.

"Firefly" [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firefly_(TV_series)] had elements which likely inspired a few aspects of this game's general feel. The show was made 16 years ago, and still has a devoted following. Such a shame that it was cancelled by soulless salesdroids masquerading as corporate executives.

you are playing them wrong then..

Don't tell me I'm playing anything wrong in a singleplayer sandbox game. Just don't.

David mentioned in his blog on books / authors / sci-fi etc. about the 'Hyperion' series of books.

I didn't register at the time; but I've picked them up via an unrelated path and am very much enjoying them. Certainly the first 2 books (which I have just done) have a fairly hefty overlap; conceptually; in to what the sector is or could be like.

Also it has 'The Shrike'.

Based on a twitter thread I stumbled on last month, I realized that the visual design of a handful of movies has had a huge effect on my art style for scifi things. So check out: 2010 (sequel to 2001), Outland (basically how mines are run in the Persean Sector, starring Sean Connery), and of course Alien/Aliens.

Huh, why have I not heard of this? It sounds right up my street - must seek out and watch.

Star Traders: Frontiers shares many elements with Starsector, both thematically and in terms of gameplay.

I tried it and it felt nothing like SS. Felt more like a trade sim than a "close-ish" SS game. For one the combat is turn based. And the officer management SUCKS!

Oh yeah i'd forgotten about Firefly. Definitely worth a rewatch. I'll just pretend firefly is the official designation of the hound before it got teeth (weapons).

The Space Vikings novel that was mentioned in the planetary raids blogpost almost reads like (preemtive) Starsector fanfiction. There are other books int eh same universe, too. It's from the 50s though, so beware the misogynism.

Having not read space vikings, but read some other scifi from the 50s I'd wager it has a poor depiction of women. And if there's any minorities I'd wager it has just as poor a depiction of them too. While it may have been a golden age for scifi some parts didn't age well at all.

What's wrong with that book?

If you only read that book it's realtively OK, it is set mostly on spaceship bridges so there are almost no women (which is an issue too, but easy to ignore). Other books have typical 50's depictions of women, who are good housewifes with no intellectual capacity but a "woman's intuition" to make up for it.

Maybe Arjen Lucassen's Star One Space Metal album, if only because ship names like High Moon are (or were) used by the game.  Of course, at least most of the titles are allegories of various films, like High Moon for Outland (starring Sean Connery).

And just like in the movie Outland, miners in Starsector are a bunch of druggies.
