Issue Launching Game
« on: October 16, 2018, 01:47:29 PM »

I just recently bought and downloaded Starsector. I downloaded it from a link on the page I purchased it at (BMT Micro Orders). My PC is running Windows 10, I have a 1920 x 1080 display, 16 GB RAM, an i7 processor, and a integrated graphics card (the Intel HD 520 which has 32 GB). From what I can tell, my specs should be more than enough.

When I run the game (via exe or cmd-line bat files), it hangs up: the icon for the game pops up in my taskbar, but no windows actually show on my screen.

In the logs, I see the following info:

After that, it hangs and is left in that state forever (until I close it). My computer does have an anti-virus running, ESET Endpoint, but I'm not sure that's causing the issue.

I've searched around but didn't find anything. Any tips for solving would be appreciated--I was looking forward to playing the game!

Sorry about the trouble! That's... really odd.

From the log, that's what it should look like when the launcher finishes loading. At that point, there should be a launcher window, where you can select your resolution and a few other settings, and then run the game. Are you sure it's not popping up under whatever other windows you've got or some such? I mean, probably not, but I have to ask just in case.

It's *possible* it might be a graphics driver issue, if those aren't up-to-date. I'd also definitely try temporarily disabling your antivirus, as well as any video capture software you might be running, or anything of the sort.

Finally, if you go into the starsector-core/data/config folder, there's a file there named "settings.json". If you open it up and change this line:

"legacyLauncher":false,

to:

"legacyLauncher":true,

That might help get a little further, though I would expect it to fail when actually starting the game from the launcher if this gets it to show, until whatever underlying problem we've got here is resolved.

Thanks Alex. I think I've narrowed down the issue, because the game works when I unplug my other monitors and run the game from my laptop's built-in monitor. It could be that the monitors are connected via USB, I'll have to try HDMI monitors later.

For reference, here's the wierd behavior:

Screenshot of my desktop:

The game is clearly running in the top left corner, and when I mouse over that space, it changes my cursor to the blue custom cursor. However, the window doesn't draw.

Yet the screenshot taken by the game itself actually shows it on the menu:

So the game is up-and-running, I just can't actually see it drawn on my screen.

Since the issue doesn't occur when I unplug the monitors, I'm all good to play. But thought you would like to know about the issue anyways.

Glad you've got it (mostly) squared away!

Thank you for letting me know the details - yeah, it's good to know, in case it comes up for someone else, so at least I've got something to suggest. (It *does* seem to generally be fine with multiple monitors; wonder what's going wrong here...)
