Saves wont load after restart

So I played the game just fine yesterday and the only thing that has changed was a system restart.
I go to load my file and no good, none of them.
I'm at a complete loss as to what happened.
I went ahead and looked at the log but I have no idea what I am looking at there.
I've poured many hours into this save and would really like to get it back.

Hmm, looks like the savefile is corrupted. Could you try using the .bak files? To do that, move to original saves somewhere and remove the .bak extension from the backups.

Looks like you're running with a bunch of mods; you've got vmparams edited to give you more memory, right?

The vmparams file has not been changed but that sounds like a good point. They are at -Xms1536m -Xmx1536m -Xss1024k. What should I change them too?

As for the .bak file, do you mean leaving only the 2 .xml files within the save folder? if so then then thank did not work
I'm not clear on what you mean by remove the extension.

I would be OK with using developer mode to get back to where I was, if there is a way to see what ships and weapons I had. I figure it's in the data somewhere.

For vmparams settings etc, check out this thread.

For renaming the files, there ought to be two .bak files:

campaign.xml.bak
descriptor.xml.bak

So what I mean is changing their names to:

campaign.xml
descriptor.xml

Which would make the game try to load them.

Now, there are already files with that name in the save folder, from the corrupted save that's failing to load, so you couldn't do the renaming until you moved those elsewhere.

For getting stuff back in a new save, check out the excellent Console Commands mod.

Ah I did not have the 'view file extension' box checked off.
Doubled the vmparas as well.
AND OMG it worked!!

I hadn't played this game in years and forgot all the little extra things I had to do.
