nVidia IRay is Cool
« on: May 14, 2018, 08:24:58 PM »

Decided to try out something new today...

This is a classic ship from a classic game.  I took some liberties with the colors, because the original turned into turbid noise when shrunk to SS sizes.

Stumped?  Look here...

...but if you had to look, you might not have earned that cookie, lol.

This is just at the "having fun" phase; I'll probably export all of this game's stuff and make it available in Spiral Arms, as it's pretty fast (now that I've done some hard work to get it working).  But I think that this is a great way to produce ships with minimalist models, fast, then detail out in post.

I looked and an still none the wiser. ;D

Though maybe my apathetic ignorance of all things manga has something to do with it?

Legionnaire from Freelancer? Ed: Or Centurion. The second one's the Bloodhound but it took me a while to figure that out

First one's actually the Titan, heh.  I was kind of astounded by how closely the three ships look like one another from above.  You're dead on about the Bloodhound, and yeah, it's not a view we saw often.

Close enough, here's a cookie  ;)

Ahhhh, *that's* where that capital ship design was from. It seemed familiar in a generic sort of way.

Yeah, the capitals are pretty boring, "Ships in Spaaaaaaace" designs, lol.  But I'm just getting going here; with some kitbashing and other things... we'll see.  Just figuring out the process, etc., right now.

Here's an Outcast fighter detailed out a little.  I'm doing most of that in post, to save time.

This is getting really easy.  Yay, I may just do all of these this way.

Patriotic space trucker, or futuristic Trump voter?  You decide.

Oh man, that brings back memories.
I'd buy that game again if some company would make a widescreen, windows 10-compatible version of it.  :)

I'd work on it for FREE if Microsoft / Digital Anvil ever released the source to me  :P

A little classic Pirate-y goodness.

I've been playing with some of the settings, trying to get to the perfect "happy place".  I think I'll try the next few out in an orthographic render and see if that's a better / worse feel.

These aren't bad, especially given how sloppy my production technique is (essentially, export the mesh to OBJ, do a few minor things, import, set material properties, render using a standardized render setup- I'm hardly doing work here until I get to post) but I think that the perspective may make them feel a little alien when seen next to Vanilla stuff.

MS giving away the source code? Hmm... I think we can just as well wait for snowstorms on the sun. :(
Oh well.

Nice stuff, I especially like the retro Eagle. No, Hawk? Falcon? The Eagle has extra wings on its back I think. Been too long.

It's a real shame so few space games like Freelancer exist. Simply fun combat and freedom in exploration.

Took me a while to get to this one.  RL struck again  ::)  Tried a couple of experiments with edges and suchlike here.

It scales down all right (no pixel-work):

After postwork.  Learned a few things from this:

1.  Compared to Vanilla, these sprites have a lot more range to the ramps, which was a little surprising; they make Vanilla sprites look flat when next to them.  Had to use Curves to bring it a little closer.

2.  Scalar cues are hard to work around; might have to replace the windows on the bigger ones.
