FPS Help
« on: July 28, 2017, 11:29:16 PM »

Hey hey! Long time player but first time poster.

I recently upgraded to a new computer from an older Macbook but have been having trouble getting Starsector to run at high FPS. I could previously get 40-50 FPS on a 2012 MacBook pro even with a dozen mods on the current build, but I can't pass 20 FPS on vanilla now on a higher spec comp. One thing I noticed is that Starsector isn't taking up much CPU power, less than 10% at any given time, even during battles where FPS is most affected.

Steps I've taken so far:
  • Added memory in vmparams. Load times are very fast but performance is still bad
  • Updated to latest drivers. No effect
  • Tried both windowed and fullscreen. No effect on performance

System specs:
Processor: Intel Core i7-6700HQ 2.6 GHz (Intel Core i7)
Graphics adapter: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 (Laptop) - 6144 MB,
Core: 1405 MHz, Memory: 4000 MHz, GDDR5,
ForceWare 368.79, Optimus
Memory: 16384 MB, 2x 8 GB SO-DIMM DDR4-2400,
Dual-Channel, 2/2 in use, up to 32 GB
Mainboard: Intel HM170 (Skylake PCH-H)

Would be great to get some help on this. Thanks in advance!

You do have Starsector using your 1060, not the igpu on your CPU right? For if you are running the GfxLib mod fully enabled, not using your discrete card yea I wouldn't expect it to run super well.

+1 to MesoTroniK and also a warning that Starsector can be temperamental about forcing it work on the dedicated GPU on laptops. On my laptop setting it to use it in the Nvidia control panel doesn't work. (I think it's a Java thing, Minecraft used to do the same a long time ago.) I have to right-click the executable and select "Run with graphics processor... -> High performance Nvidia GPU" to get it to start on the real video card.

edit: yes, I know - java.exe, not starsector.exe. Doesn't help either way.

Most likely you are setting the wrong thing to use the GFX card. You need to set the included java exe, NOT the SS exe

That might be the issue. GPU is set as default, but if there are issues with forcing it to run on the GPU, that'd explain it.

The java.exe is in the core files somewhere?

Yes. In "Fractal Softworks\Starsector\jre\bin" Look for Java.exe
