Tranverse mis-jumps?

I had something interesting happen to me just now: I used a tranverse jump to leave a system and instead of being placed outside the system, I found my fleet in the middle of a hyperspace storm about 12 light-years away from the system.

It was advantageous for me, the direction the mis-jump took chopped my return trip in half, but I'm curious if it's just some fluke or what?
