Change the AI on all fighter wings to BOMBER

The AI escorts far too much with fighters. But, if you set the AI on all fighter wings to BOMBER, the AI starts actually using them correctly.

Yes, fighters from your AI wingmen escort too much by default, and that is useless if you want to pilot a dedicated carrier or other backline unit.

The only way I can get AI's fighters to attack things is to select all and right-click target.  This is micro-management heavy, eats lots of CP, and does not work against the battlestation because carriers will enter its weapons range like suicidal idiots when told to attack with fighters.

More aggressive fighters would be an improvement.

You can get the AI to attack things with fighters, you just need an aggressive or reckless officer. But then the AI pilots the carrier aggressively along with the fighters and charges things. You can either have the AI be effective with its fighters and suicidal with the carrier, or useless with the fighters and appropriately cautious with the carrier. And, of course, if you don't have enough of the right type of officer you're straight out of luck.

Does the "Fighter Strike" or "Eliminate" command make fighters more aggressive?

Yes, but only until the specific selected target dies. If there was a command to, say, make all carriers never have their fighters escort anything for the rest of the battle, I would be hitting that button every single fight.

Carriers should only escort allies who have high flux and have either an enemy ship or multiple fighters within 500 SU or so. Otherwise, what's the point? They're just wasting the carrier's potential by doing nothing. I don't need 3 wings to escort me, I need the carrier to find something to kill.

This is why I wrote elsewhere that Command & Control 3 and Operations Center hullmod on the flagship are useful for carrier fleets, mainly to overcome this (silly or stupid) limitation, until they need to kill a battlestation, then carriers charge and die.  It would be so nice if AI carriers just sent fighters to kill things while remaining in the backline.

Currently, without Fighter Strike micromanagement, having AI-controlled carriers is useful only if the flagship is a frontline combatant.  Otherwise, if you are a backline unit, the escort gets wasted.

Fighters would be more useful if they swarmed against enemies by default.  Leave escort by default to designated support fighters like Xyphos.  Everything else should attack enemies by default.

I have an Astral with Xyphos and Longbows and it doesn't want to use them to attack, which is really weird.

My other Astral with Claws and Daggers perform exactly as you would expect.

EDIT: I figured it out, having Xyphos on the carrier was somehow preventing it from using it's craft for anything other then escorting it's self.
